This species is native to China North-Central, China South-Central, East Himalaya, Inner Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Qinghai, Tadzhikistan, Tibet, West Himalaya, and Xinjiang. Festuca cumminsii prefers temperate biomes and is perennial. This species was first described in 1896.
