Background

On February 27, 1999, Riza Kika, chief of the security service at the limestone factory in Kaçanik, was abducted by members of the KLA and taken to Gajre.

Ambush

On February 28, 1999, Bogoljub Staletović and his MUP unit were sent to rescue Riza Kika. While en route, they were ambushed by a KLA unit using mortars, machine guns, and rocket launchers. Staletović was killed instantly, and four of his men were severely wounded.

Aftermath

After the initial ambush, the Associated Press, which was on the scene, reported that angry Serb policemen claimed the MUP unit was ambushed while responding to a "bogus" anonymous telephone call about Serbs being kidnapped in the area.
