Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa (IUC) is a public research university which was formed in Istanbul on 18 May 2018. It takes its name from Cerrah Mehmed Pasha, who gave its name to the Cerrahpaşa, Fatih district in Istanbul. It has nine faculties, six Institutes, one college, five Vocational schools and ten research centers. The rectorate of the university, which has 8 campuses, is located in Avcılar. In addition, the university provides education in two languages, Turkish and English.

History

Istanbul University underwent a significant structural reorganization in 2018, resulting in its division into two separate institutions: Istanbul University and Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa. This separation was undertaken to improve administrative efficiency and service delivery by taking geographical location and functional specialization into account.

The reorganization was guided by the historical and functional distribution of the university's faculties and campuses. Istanbul Medical School, commonly known as "Çapa," became the central component of Istanbul University. Units located in Çapa, Beyazıt, Vezneciler, and other nearby areas remained under Istanbul University.

Cerrahpaşa Medical School became the leading unit of the newly formed Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa. Campuses and faculties located in Cerrahpaşa, Avcılar, Sarıyer, and other locations were incorporated into this new institution, which operates under the domain İstanbul University-Cerrahpaşa. Functional considerations also influenced the distribution of faculties. For example, the two medical schools were separated, and various schools of liberal arts, economics, and social sciences were divided between the two universities based on their academic orientations.

Unlike university systems that share a centralized administration, such as the University of California system, Istanbul University and Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa are two fully independent entities. Each university has its own presidency and governance structure. The faculties that form both universities have long-established histories. For instance, the Cerrahpaşa Medical School was founded in 1827, reflecting the enduring academic traditions of the institutions.
