Jose Manuel Vargas Sarquis is a Venezuelan ophthalmologist working in the field of anterior segment surgery.
He is recognized for his work on cataract surgery, corneal diseases and techniques that involve accommodating intraocular lenses (Tek-Clear), phakic IOLs (Implantable Collamer Lens and Kelman Duet), and artificial corneas (KeraKlear and Boston keratoprosthesis).
He is currently the Head of the Ophthalmology Division at King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz University Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Early life and education
Born in Valencia, Venezuela, Dr. Vargas pursued his medical education at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Mexico and at the Universidad del Zulia in Venezuela.
Dr. Vargas further specialized in ophthalmology through residency training at Francisco Antonio Risquez Hospital in Caracas, Venezuela and advanced fellowship training in corneal and external diseases at the UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
Medical career and contributions
Dr. Jose Manuel Vargas Sarquis has served as the Head of the Ophthalmology Division at King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz University Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia since April 2021. He also served as Chairman of the Surgery Department of the same hospital from June 2021 to August 2022.
Until February 2021, he was the Chairman of the Anterior Segment Division at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital (KKESH) in Riyadh. In this role, he coordinated the KKESH Global Education Forum and opened the first Keratoprosthesis clinic in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East in 2019.
Dr. Vargas implemented the world's first implantation of the Tekia TekClear accommodative IOL prototype in Valencia, Venezuela, in 2004. He is among the first to introduce implantation of anterior chamber phakic IOLs in Latin America in 2003.
He has co-authored numerous scientific papers in the field of ophthalmology. He has written the chapter on “Foldable Nonpenetrating Artificial Cornea” in the 2015 book entitled Mastering corneal surgery: recent advances and current techniques. He also authored the chapter "Cirugía de cataratas muy duras" in the 2006 book titled Buscando la excelencia en la cirugía de la catarata.
Dr. Vargas has served as Founder and Co-Director of Centro Oftalmológico de Valencia (CEOVAL) since 1995.
Professional affiliations
Dr. Vargas is actively involved in several professional organizations contributing to the advancement of ophthalmology. He is a member of the Venezuelan Society of Ophthalmology, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS). He has served as a country liaison for the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society and is a founding member of the Latin American Association of Cataract, Refractive and Anterior Segment Surgery (ALACCSA-R).
