Junko Kawamata (川俣純子, Kawamata Junko) (born 20 October 1960 in Nasukarasuyama) is a Japanese politician. She was twice elected mayor of Nasukarasuyama, Tochigi Prefecture, and became the prefecture's first female mayor in 2017.

Life

Kawamata was born on October 20, 1960, in Nasukarasuyama. The daughter of a dentist, she studied dentistry and worked in her father's office until 2007. She became a member of the municipal council of the same city in 2010, despite the opposition of her parents.

Kawamata announced his candidacy for mayor of Nasukarasuyama in August 2017, after the current mayor, Norio Ōya, announced his retirement. She was supported by the Liberal Democratic Party and the Kōmeitō, but nevertheless ran as an independent and focused her campaign on measures aimed at countering the city's declining population. She was elected, and became the first woman mayor of Tochigi Prefecture. She was re-elected in 2021, unopposed.
