Kevin Yi (or Yee Kar Yeung, Traditional Chinese: 易家揚) is a Taiwanese lyricist and music industry professional. Yi has been nominated for the Best Lyricist award at the Golden Melody Awards and has collaborated with notable artists such as Stefanie Sun, JJ Lin, Coco Lee, Chief Zhao, and Yida Huang. He is currently an exclusive writer for Warner Chappell Music.

Career

Early career

Early in his career, Yi joined the marketing department of Rock Records in Taiwan. Yi's first project was Chief Zhao's “A Tiny Bird” (我是一隻小小鳥).

Yi then moved on to serve as an A&R, and later joined BMG Music as the Marketing and Promotion Director. At the same time, he published numerous lyrics that were featured in popular tracks.

Songwriting

Yi wrote the lyrics for the Chinese version of “A Love Before Time”, the theme song for the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This song was performed by Coco Lee and featured Yo-Yo Ma on cello. It was also nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards.

During his time serving as the Marketing Director at Warner Music, Yi made contributions to the debuts of artists including Stefanie Sun and Yida Huang. Over the years, Yi has written lyrics for numerous tracks, including Leehom Wang's “Forever's First Day” (永遠的第一天), A-Mei's “Remember” (記得), Stefanie Sun's “Kite” (風箏), “Love Dictionary” (愛情字典), “Someone Like Me” (同類), “Encounter” (遇見), F.I.R's “Crescent Bay” (月牙灣), and Khalil Fong's “Fu Ke Hui Yi” (復刻回憶). The song Yi wrote for JJ Lin in 2013, “Practice Love” (修煉愛情), was awarded Hito Pop Music Best 10 Singles, and Singapore Hit Awards Best 10 Singles.

Current career

Yi plays various roles in the Chinese music industry. As of 2020, Yi worked on Eason Chan's “Soar” (披風), JJ Lin's “53 Dawns” (黑夜問白天), A-Mei and Sandy Lam's “Double Shadow” (雙影), and Mayday vocalist Ashin's cover of Joi Chua's song “The Hidden Memories” (隱形的紀念).

Awards and recognition

For his lyrics in 地下鐵 (Singer: 鍾漢良, Composer: 邰正宵), Yi was nominated for the Best Lyricist Award in the 10th Golden Melody Award in 1999.
