Abarenda reached Norfolk on 14 January 1905. Late in the month, the ship made another coaling trip to Puerto Rico before again going out of commission at Norfolk on 21 February 1905. At that time, the ship's Navy crew was removed; and, that afternoon, the vessel was placed in service with a merchant crew.
