Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions is an anime television series based on Torako's light novel of the same name and produced by Kyoto Animation. The first season of the series aired in Japan from October 4 to December 19, 2012. A short series of original net animation, Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions Lite, was streamed on YouTube between September 27 and November 1, 2012. An animated film served as a retelling of the series was released on September 14, 2013. The series was released on six Blu-ray and DVD compilation volumes by Pony Canyon, between December 19, 2012 and May 15, 2013. The volumes contained bonus shorts, Depth of Field: Love and Hate Theater. A seventh volume with the original video animation episode and the Lite shorts, were released on June 19, 2013. Sentai Filmworks licensed the series. It was streamed on The Anime Network.

The opening theme is "Sparkling Daydream" by Zaq, and the ending theme is "Inside Identity" by Black Raison d'être (Maaya Uchida, Chinatsu Akasaki, Azumi Asakura and Sumire Uesaka). The season has three insert songs, including "Hajimari no Tane" (始まりの種, The Seed of Start) by Zaq in episode 8, and "Kimi no Tonari ni" (君のとなりに, Next to You) by Zaq and "Miagete Goran Yoru no Hoshi o" (見上げてごらん夜の星を, Look Up at the Stars in the Night) by Uchida in episode 10. The single for "Sparkling Daydream" was released on October 24, 2012 and "Inside Identity" on November 21, 2012. For the Lite episodes, the opening theme "Kimi e" (君へ, To You) and the ending theme "Shikkoku ni Odoru Haōbushi" (漆黒に躍る弧濁覇王節, The Melody of Conqueror Dancing in Jet Black), are sung by Zaq.

After discarding his past grandiose delusions, Yūta Togashi discovers Rikka Takanashi descending at the apartment balcony. On the first day of junior high school, Yūta accompanies Makoto Isshiki. After seeing Rikka with signs of chūnibyō syndrome, Yūta knows that she has eavesdropped on him about the delusions. Despite lacking interest in reliving it, Rikka calls Yūta a soulmate. Makoto invites Yūta, but Nanase Tsukumo asks Yūta to bring Rikka to the apartment, since she and Tōka moved in two days ago. That night, Kuzuha tells him that Rikka has moved away from her grandparents. While unpacking the boxes, Yūta keeps the memorabilia.

Rikka and Yūta find a stray cat in a playground, identifying it as a chimera, though they cannot keep it due to Tōka's allergy to cats. After a student council meeting, Yūta meets Shinka Nibutani. Later, Kumin Tsuyuri tells her friends about the cat. She and Yūta find it back at the apartment. Tōka follows Rikka one apartment room below, and Rikka is consequently knocked out while evading. Threatening to expose Yūta's recorded behaviour, Tōka asks him to abandon the cat. However, as Rikka leaves with it, Yūta and Kumin leave with the recording device. Tōka approaches them at the playground and defeats Rikka. Soon, Yūta becomes the owner.
33"The Heretical… Pigtailed Girl"

It has been a month since Yūta joined high school. He, Rikka and Kumin plan to launch a school club, though no members can sign up for it. After trying out for each rooms, Rikka calls for backup, something which Yūta fears could be trouble. The next day, Yūta and Rikka meet and recruit Sanae Dekomori. Despite lacking a fifth member, Nanase offers a provisional classroom as a clubroom for the girls. As Yūta denies about it, his resolve soon falters when Shinka decides to join them. They name the club: Far East Magical Napping Society Summer Thereof.
44"Regret of... the Mabinogion"

During a quiz, Yūta becomes curious about Shinka. Sanae searches for a notebook called the Mabinogion containing information of Shinka's alter ego Mori Summer, but Shinka finds it from Yūta's apartment and destroys it from embarrassment. Shinka reveals that she joined the club just to discard it, but she is shocked to learn that Sanae had multiple copies. When Sanae does not believe about the ego, Yūta suggests that Shinka should appeal to the delusions, but she decides to join the club until she plans to destroy the evidence.
55"A Binding... Hard Study"

Having a low score on the math semester exam, Rikka notices that her club would be disbanded if she fails it. When she does not study, it is revealed that Sanae is the top student in her grade. Yūta and the girls do horseplay over cleaning the swimming pool. Nanase encourages Rikka to make the class average in order to keep the club. Yūta helps Rikka study at home, though she gets distracted. During a break, Yūta and Rikka exchange email addresses. Yūta offers to come up with a new one for Rikka if she passes the test, using various bribes each day for a week to get her to study hard. After the exam, Rikka ends up scoring relatively low, but manages to land just above the class average and Yūta makes a new email address for her.
66"The Atoned... Innocent"

Yūta and Rikka draw pictures of each other, and mix responses from other classmates during art class. Later, Makoto asks Yūta for advice, concerning an anonymous love letter that he received and assuming Shinka wrote it. Yūta bears witness for Shinka as she feuds with Sanae. Makoto inadvertently drops a notepad about the ranking of girls near the train station, but Inomata retrieves and brings it to school. Makoto reluctantly owns up to the notepad in order to protect other boys, unintentionally offering to shave his head in apology. Despite his plea not to go through with it, Makoto is given a buzz cut by Yūta. Makoto goes to the ginkgo tree and is surprisingly welcomed by other boys in class. He later develops a crush on Kumin, who is fond of his new look. That night, Tōka invites Yūta and Rikka for summer vacation.
77"Reminiscences... of Paradise Lost"

Yūta, Makoto and the girls travel by train on summer vacation. However, Yūta notices that Rikka seems quiet. Upon meeting Rikka and Tōka's grandparents in a cottage, everyone gets acquainted. Yūta learns that Rikka used to live with her grandparents, and did not visit the grave after her father died a few years ago. That night, Yūta and Rikka leave the cottage, and visit a vacant lot in the neighbourhood where her father lived three years ago. Tōka arrives and reminds Rikka about the reality of the situation.
88"Exiled... Just the Two of Them"

Tōka forces Rikka to forget their father. Yūta tells Tōka that Rikka's delusions are intended to reveal the truth. While returning home, Yūta tells Rikka that he started his behaviour when he was isolated from the others. Rikka realizes that she left the apartment key and the family left there, leaving the two to spend overnight. Makoto calls Yūta for advice, leading him to contemplate about Rikka. As Yūta tries to put those thoughts behind Makoto, Rikka harbors her feelings for Yūta.
99"A Confused... Chaos Heart"

Shinka plans to change the club for the cultural ginkgo festival, but Yūta has not been talking to Rikka since summer vacation. As the theme is revealed to be a performance starring Yūta and Rikka, the others become worried when they find out that the two had not been talking to each other. Worrying about Rikka, Yūta tries to comfort her, but she avoids him. After telling Kumin that Yūta is possessed by the force, Rikka soon recruits Sanae to perform a ritual on him at the shrine, which he naturally sees through. Meanwhile, Shinka tells Kumin that Rikka is in love with Yūta. Shinka convinces Rikka to admit her feelings for Yūta. After a failed confession, Yūta saves Rikka from falling off the school roof.

Rikka talks to Sanae, while Yūta asks Makoto for advice. Yūta and Rikka confess each other. Despite the initial awkwardness, Rikka confesses first. That night, Tōka tells Yūta that she will move to Italy, and Rikka will accompany her mother and grandparents. Because of this, Tōka asks Yūta to have Rikka grow out of phase. Yūta and Rikka dress up in costumes for the talent show. Some time later, Yūta tells Rikka to remove her eyepatch, which does not settle well. Rikka performs her father's song on stage. She removes her eyepatch and a golden contact.

It has been three weeks since Rikka removed her eyepatch, Tōka goes to Italy. Rikka struggles to adjust the normality, but Sanae becomes sad about it. Shinka questions Yūta if he regrets about Rikka, but he realizes that Tōka stopped worrying and things are going well with Rikka's mother. With Rikka making new friends at school, she announces to everyone that the club is disbanded, much to Sanae's dismay. Yūta and Rikka remove her property from the bedroom, before her mother arrives, but he begins to wonder if he does the right thing. As Rikka boards the train alone, Sanae confronts Yūta about how Rikka had wanted him to accept her persona. Despite feeling the same way, Yūta ends up lashing out at Sanae, believing that it would be pointless if he were to say something to Rikka.

As Yūta worries about having not seen Rikka in a while, Sanae discards her persona whilst Kumin starts impersonating Rikka, much to Yūta's chagrin. When the clubroom closes, Shinka confides in Yūta that having a persona is like being in the club. That night, Yūta learns that Rikka has returned to the cottage. After reading a letter from his past self, he leaves the apartment, and sees Kumin relaying a message from Rikka about how she had previously met him two years ago, and admiring the syndrome. As Yūta reunites with Rikka, they accept their own personas. He brings her to the "Invisible Boundary Line", encouraging her to say goodbye to her father. Rikka soon resumes her act, despite Yūta still finding it a little embarrassing.

On Christmas Eve, Sanae invites the gang to a party at her house. The girls try on unique outfits, and the guys are concerned. Yūta and Rikka board the ship at the amusement park to spend quality time, before meeting the others. The intoxicated Sanae causes a commotion about how Rikka keeps talking about Yūta. Sanae almost pushes Rikka from the boat, but Yūta saves Rikka, and Sanae inadvertently kisses Shinka. Back at home, Yūta sees Rikka wearing a black Santa dress.

After Rikka wakes up in the clubroom to what appears to be a nightmare of a wedding, she tells Sanae and Kumin the story about how she first met Yūta, and how they ended up bound to one another. The film has a retelling story of the first season, which provides transition scenes for the second one.
