Misako Izu (伊豆美沙子, Izu Misako, born 21 January 1959 Munakata ) is a Japanese politician. She is an Independent, but supported by the Liberal Democratic Party. She was twice elected mayor of Munakata, in Fukuoka Prefecture, and became the first female governor of the prefecture in 2018.
Career
She studied Japanese literature at Kyoto Women's University. She joined the family sake-making business, where she became a manager. She also lectured at Fukuoka University.
Izu began her electoral career as a member of the Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly in 2011, which she held for two terms. In 2018, she announced that she would run for municipal elections in Munakata . She campaigned as a continuation of the city's former mayor, Hiromi Tanii. She focused her campaign promises on local industry, the preservation of the city's heritage, and community building.
She was elected mayor of Munakata on 21 April 2018, supported by the Liberal Democratic Party and Kōmeitō, becoming the first female governor of Fukuoka Prefecture.
She was re-elected in April 2022, despite the city's lowest turnout ever recorded.
