The Octopodidae comprise the family containing the majority of known octopus species (about 175 species).

The World Register of Marine Species lists these 23 genera:

Two fossil genera are also known: Styletoctopus from the Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian) of the Sannine Formation in Lebanon, and Bolcaoctopus from the Early Eocene (Ypresian) of Monte Bolca, Italy.
