Shafiqur Rahman (Bengali: শফিকুর রহমান; born 31 October 1958) is a Bangladeshi politician and physician who has been serving as the Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami since 2019. Previously, he served as the acting secretary-general of Jamaat-e-Islami from October 2016 to November 2019, until his election as Ameer on 12 November 2019. Before being the secretary-general, he had been the Ameer of Sylhet City branch of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Early life

Rahman was born on 31 October 1958 at Bhatera Union under Kulaura Upazila of Moulvibazar District. His father's name is Abru Mia and mother's name is Khatibun. He is the third son of his family. Rahman passed SSC from Baramachal High School in 1974, then he passed HSC from MC College in Sylhet in 1976. He got his MBBS degree from Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College in 1983.

Career

Rahman started his political life through the student wing of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal in 1973. He joined Islami Chhatra Shibir in 1977. While he was studying in Sylhet Osmani Medical College, he became president of the Chhatra Shibir medical branch and later the Sylhet District branch. In 1984, He joined the Jamaat-e-Islami. Later, he served as Sylhet's emir. After taking office at the central level as assistant secretary-general in 2010 and the first acting secretary-general on 19 September 2011, he took over as secretary general in 2016.

Personal life

Rahman was married on 5 January 1985 to Dr. Ameena Begum. She served as the member of parliament for a reserved seat in the eighth Jatiya Sangsad election. The married couple have 3 children including 2 daughters and 1 son.
