History
Sika was founded in 1910 under the name Kaspar Winkler & Co, Zurich, by Austrian Kaspar Winkler. Winkler's first inventions were agents to protect and clean granite and a waterproofing agent for mortars. The waterproofing products were used to seal and protect the Gotthard Rail Tunnel from 1918 through 1922, which let to international recognition of his company.
With Romuald Burkhard, the second generation of the owner's family entered in 1953. He was named CEO in 1961 and chairman in 1971.
In 2006, the Sika Group was active in 70 countries and had a workforce of approximately 12'000.
In 2009, revenue was CHF 4.2 billion.
In 2014, an unfriendly takeover was launched by French company Saint-Gobain. The Burkhard family wanted to sell its shareholdings to Saint-Gobain at an elevated prize due to the control majority of its privileged shares. The management of Sika and other shareholders, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, opposed this deal. After a long legal battle, an agreement was reached in 2018. The heirs of the Burkhard family received cash payments for their shares, Saint-Gobain became a minority shareholder and Sika remained an independent company.
In May 2019, Sika acquired Parex, a global mortar manufacturer with a focus on tile setting materials and facade renderings. Headquartered in France, Parex had more than 4,500 employees and 1,034 million € revenue.
In May 2023, the British MBCC Group, a supplier of construction chemicals with 6000 employees in 60 countries, was acquired.
