Comment
This article should be updated to follow the format of other '$' redirects (e.g. $2, $5 etc). Perhaps it could be semi-protected?? (Extra3 21:22, 2 February 2007 (UTC))
Internationalize
$1 can mean more than just "one dollar". It can also mean "one peso". I propose that this page be turned into a disambiguation page similar to $2, $5, etc. Rawr 06:32, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
- I would love to do that, but the page is protected. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 18:16, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
- I just made a request to unprotect it at Misplaced Pages:Requests for page protection. But it seems that the reason it was protected in the first place was not because of vandalism or revert war, but technical difficulty. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 18:28, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
{{editprotected}.}
Should be redirected to $ per the above. 68.39.174.238 21:58, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
Ok, I changed the target of the redirect to $. Respond here if you prefer a different option, but a redirect to the disambiguation page makes sense. NoSeptember 22:06, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
Actually, I was thinking of replacing the redirect with a disambiguation page, similar to $2, $5, $10, etc. After all, "$1" should not be about the dollar sign, but the amount of money: $1. Rawr 04:52, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
- I believe the reason is a technical one. The log says "MediaWiki namespace/user interface bugs can often cause accidental editing of this page". Some MediaWiki code must be written with $1 as variable. But it could, sometimes, show as a link to $1 itself. See Special:Whatlinkshere/$1. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 06:50, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
Change redirect
Why don't we redirect to $1 (disambiguation) instead and make the format match $2? - grubber 19:10, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
- That sounds like a good idea. For those of you who just joined this discussion, see also Talk:10 cents. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 19:24, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
- I third that. $2 has much better content. (Extra3 21:17, 2 February 2007 (UTC))
- I've unprotected $1, I think we will be ok with it that way. We don't really need a disambiguation page, we can do it here IMO, but edit as you guys see fit. NoSeptember 22:46, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
MediaWiki
This article is constantly linked in MediaWiki pages — is there any problem? Slade (TheJoker) 19:48, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think so, since all such links are replaced by actual text when people see the messages themselves. Gracenotes § 02:59, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Recent bold edits
This DAB page was recently marked for deletion (in the page itself, not on the talk page) and then 4 hours later changed to a redirect page. It seems to me that it had useful DAB information -- i.e., disambiguating between several uses of the dollar sign -- to mean dollar, peso, and several other curencies -- and even a formal parameter in computer science. I'm not sure what to do -- don't think I should just revert back to the status quo ante, but I do think this merits some actual discussion rather than just bold editing. It certainly shouldn't be a redirect to Dollar. Thanks. YBG (talk) 06:19, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
- I've reverted it. We can have a discussion here before making such drastic changes. I don't think the article should be deleted... at the very least it should go to Afd instead of PROD, as it's not an uncontroversial deletion and has been here for some time. As discussed above, redirecting to dollar is not useful either, as $ is also used for a few other currencies. Rawr (talk) 15:45, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
- I really don't see how this adds anything not already at dollar (except the "formal parameter" mention, which hardly merits saving a whole page for). Hairhorn (talk) 17:28, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
- $ is used to refer to more than just dollar. Pesos are another currency that also uses the symbol. For a full list, read the article. Rawr (talk) 04:18, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
- The Peso is actually mentioned at dollar. I would think the one big difference between these entries should be a brief history of how the symbol came about, but this entry doesn't do that. Hairhorn (talk) 11:28, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

The middle section may not be necessary (People can go to dollar or peso to find out more). However, the top, and formal parameter in programming, and links to dollar and peso are useful. For a few selected currencies, there are articles decicated just for this denomination. When a casual user searches "$1", it is not unlikely that the specific $1 bill or coin is what s/he wants to find out. Although dollar sign mentions peso, a direct link to peso from $1 isn't redundant, as they are directly related. ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 04:21, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
