Why the Icelandic names aren't transliterated?

There is no such letter "Þ" in the English ABC. And even "á" and "ö" aren't allowed. Or we should write Москва and 北京 in the English articles to be consistent. 88.147.173.244 (talk) 07:27, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

Mangling of Icelandic names has not really been a thing on the English Misplaced Pages thus far. Maybe there is a guideline or policy of which I am not aware. Comparing Icelandic characters to logograms is a bit much. Stefán Örvar Sigmundsson (talk) 14:15, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
I agree with OP. Is the justification that, formally, "Þ" is part of a Latin-script alphabet? In the real world, for the average reader of the English Misplaced Pages "Þ" isn't any better than "Д" or "干". One may object to "á" and "ö" (I do), at least one can ignore the diacritics (and they aren't based on runes), Þ is just unreadable at first sight.
Somewhere out there is a policy that prescribes mangling of well over 50% of enwiki articles, there is simply no need to have one specifically for the Icelandic alphabet. The solution already exists. - EnTerbury (talk) 09:34, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
