Thomond Bridge is the name of a former and current bridge over the river Shannon in Limerick city.
Historic bridge
The earliest bridge, was built near a fording point. It was the scene of a failed defence of the city during the Siege of Limerick. The old medieval Thomond bridge of fourteen arches was on the same site as the current bridge, near King John's Castle. The Treaty Stone was placed near there.
Current bridge
The current bridge of seven arches was built from 1836 to 1836, replacing the earlier bridge, incorporating pier foundations from the old. The bridge now forms part of the R445 (formerly N7), carrying traffic on the Northern Relief Road.
