Brutal death metal — ...
Characteristics
The genre is a mix of Floridian death metal, grindcore and hardcore. Typical vocal for the genre is growl and similar styles (pig-squeal, for example). The vocals are incomprehensible and sound like "they're coming from the drain of a badly malfunctioning toilet". The lyrics is gory.
The guitar riffs are downtuned with frequent high-pitched pinch harmonics. Melodic riffs are "inappropriate" for brutal death. The bass guitars are mostly inaudible and sound like a rumble.
The drums are representations of endless blast-beats. Snare drum along with the "tinny" cymbals add a distinct "rawness" to the music.
The modern brutal death metal acts often use torture-porn samples.
History

Technical brutal death metal
This off-shot is characterised by high accuracy of performance. Suffocation from New York was one of the genre's pioneers. Suffocation's album Effigy of the Forgotten (1991) set new standarts of a technicality in brutal death that influences the overall style.
The technical bands include Deeds of Flesh, Brain Drill, Severed Savior [de], Malignancy and Origin.
Slamming brutal death metal
Slam has been generated by extremization and simplification of brutal death. The off-shot was heavily influenced by goregrind. Slam is characterized by slow riffs, blast-beats, irregular rhythm, focusing on accuracy of perfomance and sound intensity, and low distorted vocals. Pioneers of this style include Devourment, Cephalotripsy, Waking The Cadaver etc.
