Ken Ohara (Japanese: 小原 健 April 26, 1977) is a video game, film, and television director, action director, cinematic director, pre-visualization director, director, editor, and virtual camera cinematographer working in Japan, the United States, and New Zealand. Born in Yokohama, Japan. Member of the Screen Actors Guild SAG and the American Federation of Television and Radio Entertainers AFTRA. Graduated from Yokohama City Ichigao Junior High School, Nichita Ebara High School, and Los Angeles City College Film Department.
Biography
At the age of 20, he began making many short action films as an independent production with his brother Go Ohara (director of Geisha vs. Ninja and Gothic Lolita Executioner). Later, as "OHARA BROS.", they incorporated innovative techniques and Hong Kong film style wire action to produce low-budget but high quality films.
In 2002, he graduated from Los Angeles City College with a degree in film studies. In the same year, he directed and edited a documentary film for the PlayStation 2 game "Rise to Honor" in North America, which included an interview with the world famous action star Jet Li himself. He later became a member of Just Cause Productions, Inc., where he worked as an action director, film director, virtual camera cinematographer, and editor for various projects including games, movies, TV dramas, music videos, commercials, and animations. Furthermore, he is also active as a stuntman, wire action coordinator, and actor (member of the Screen Actors Guild SAG and the American Federation of Television and Radio Entertainers AFTRA). In 2006, he was appointed as action director for the American version of the TV series "Kamen Rider Dragon Knight" (broadcasted in 2009). The following year, he directed and edited the action for the cinematic movie (cut scenes) for "Resident Evil 5" and in 2009, he directed the action for the American version of the Hero Sentai series "Flaming God Sentai Go-onger" (Power Rangers RPM - broadcast in 2009).
In 2012, he was the cinematic director (cut-scene director) for "Resident Evil 6", which sold over 7.1 million copies worldwide. In 2013, he directed all action scenes for the Hollywood feature film "Black Cobra" which was released by film distributor Lionsgate. After that, he worked as an action designer for many Hollywood movies and TV dramas, and as an action director for motion capture projects before returning to Japan in 2014.
He was in charge of pre-visualization for the promotional video "SUBARU VIZIV2" and succeeded in creating a new direction in the VFX industry by utilizing 100% of the power of the virtual camera. He has been involved in many Japanese productions since then. In 2015, he was appointed as a Virtual Camera Supervisor for the "Shin Godzilla" movie as part of the pre-visualization team.
His film "CARPE DIEM" is now available on Amazon Prime Video and "LAST STAGE" on Cinema Discoveries.
