metaphysical current(Italian sympathizers are in contact with the New York center:) Society of Jewish Science 109 East 39th Street New York, New York 10016 – USA Tel.: 001-212-682-2626 URL: www.thecenterforappliedjudaism.org The Jewish Science movement arose from a controversy in the 1910s, during which the major American Jewish organizations – first Orthodox, then also Reform – declared that it was incompatible with their members.attending Christian Science. The Christian focus of Christian Science causes problems in Jewish circles, although many participants in the movement insist that this participation, if anything, makes them better Jews. From this debate emerges Alfred Geiger Moses (1878-1958), a Reform rabbi from Mobile (Alabama), who in 1915 anonymously published the pamphlet Jewish Science , the nucleus of a larger study published with the same title – and with the author's signature – in 1920. In this text, he argues that the thought of the founder of the Jewish mystical current called Hasidism , the Ba'al Shem Tov (1698-1760) is the source of the ideas of Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910), and that Christian Science is a form of Hasidism with a Christian veneer. As for the cure of diseases through faith, this is not an invention of the Christian metaphysical current or of Christian Science, but of a tradition that has always existed in Judaism. In truth, Moses is closer to New Thought than to Christian Science in that, unlike the latter, he does not deny the existence of matter. It emphasizes the need to think “the right thoughts” and train the mind with “affirmations” (short statements affirming belief in a creator God), following a proper diet, avoiding excess, and fleeing from anger. In 1922, Rabbi Morris Lichtenstein (1889-1938), a Lithuanian-born rabbi, gave institutional form to Moses' ideas and founded the Society for Jewish Science in New York. The success – as had happened with Christian Science – also generated competition: Rabbi Clifton Harby Levy (1867-1962) founded a rival Center of Jewish Science in 1923, which continued its activities until the 1950s. In 1925, Lichtenstein published Jewish Science and Health , which owed much to Mary Baker Eddy's Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures , but adapted it specifically for a Jewish audience. Upon his death, he was succeeded by his wife Tehilla Lichtenstein (1893-1973), who further emphasized the differences between Jewish Science and Christian Science and established an initial presence in Israel. Today Jewish Science presents itself as “authentically Jewish” but not tied to any of the organized branches of Judaism. It has no synagogues of its own, but a “sanctuary” inaugurated in 1993 at the New York center; however, it maintains a list of synagogues that it considers “affiliated” with the movement. None of these are in Italy, where there are, however, readers of Lichtenstein’s works and sympathizers in contact with the American center. B.: L’opera scientifica di riferimento è quella di Ellen M. (אוהדים איטלקים נמצאים בקשר עם המרכז בניו יורק:) Society of Jewish Science 109 East 39th Street New York, New York 10016 – ארה"ב טל': 001-212-682-2626 כתובת אתר: www.thecenterforappliedjudaism.org תנועת המדע היהודי נולדה מפולמוס בשנות ה-19, שבמהלכו הארגונים היהודיים האמריקאים הגדולים - תחילה אורתודוכסים, ואחר כך גם רפורמים - הכריזו כי היא אינה מתאימה לחבריהם. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures , ב.: L'opera scientifica di riferimento è quella di Ellen M.
