DYK for 945 Madison Avenue

On 24 April 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 945 Madison Avenue, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the overall design of 945 Madison Avenue (pictured) has been likened to an inverted ziggurat? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/945 Madison Avenue. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, 945 Madison Avenue), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

New Columbus Crew stadium

Hi~ What is the difference?

  • New Columbus Crew Stadium / New Columbus Crew stadium
  • Nashville Fairgrounds Stadium
  • New Columbus Crew stadium
  • New York City FC stadium
  • Nippert Stadium
  • Nissan Stadium
  • St. Louis City stadium
  • Saputo Stadium

In MLS stadiums, Most stadiium name have capital letter(Stadium), others are not. Footwiks (talk) 02:47, 24 April 2021 (UTC)

This stadium is not yet completed, so there isn't really an official name for it, besides perhaps "New Crew Stadium". I just find the generic naming - new stadium for the Columbus Crew - to work well here for now. ɱ (talk) 03:04, 24 April 2021 (UTC)

Ajf773

Looking at his talk page and editing logs (190 page creations, of which 119 are deletion nominations), he's obviously a contentious editor who's more interested in knocking down than building up. Unfortunately, I can't think of what to do about him and his single-mindedness about bus route deletions, as his behaviour hasn't been so egregious to warrant an ANI. Or is it enough to ask for a topic ban? AlgaeGraphix (talk) 15:05, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Request to review Draft article about Jonathan Kaplan

Hi, I am a declared COI editor and I recently posted a draft article for Jonathan Kaplan. Unfortunately, the article was declined, with the explanation that it does not show notability. However, I believe that I have established notability with several excellent sources that are specifically about Kaplan and not just "passing mentions." I suspect that the reviewer did not carefully examine the sources. I would appreciate a second opinion on this, and because of your interest in the Culinary Institute of America, where Kaplan is a trustee, I decided to turn to you. I hope you can find the time to look at the draft, and especially look at the Fortune, WSJ, Wired, and Bizjournals references. Thanks so much. TalforJonKaplan (talk) 13:54, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi TalforJonKaplan - I don't have much time to invest in this, and don't have much interest in the subject. However, I will state that the article still use some improvement. Expand the lead to summarize every section. Provide more background/personal information if available. Give more details into his career, including how exactly he got to the places he did, and what precisely he accomplished. Remove the awards section altogether. Balance any positives with challenges or negatives. I can check back once you've done some and let you know what I think. ɱ (talk) 16:58, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

On improving city articles

Hello Ɱ,

I've been aware of your articles and work for 5-6 years now. Would you be open to giving advice on how I can bring Buffalo, New York to GA or FA status? I feel like I'm swamped with all kinds of different sources and can't put together the puzzle while learning the WP guidelines. Buffaboy 06:15, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

@Buffaboy: Hi and thanks! I suppose you found my Briarcliff Manor project; that involved essentially re-writing the article from scratch. WP:USCITIES is a guide that really helped with that. And honestly, it's a lot of work. I have been writing about Columbus, Ohio for a while now, but I'm nowhere near close to GA yet on that. For me with Briarcliff, it took a peer review, copyedit request, utilizing about a half dozen history books dozens of times, and learning at the historical society while digitizing the most important photographs. In both places, I have had to travel around and take my own photographs to ensure that the best subjects are illustrated and photographed as best as I can take or find.
Here are some individual pointers:
  • Is the first downtown panorama the best possible? Focus seems to be on the lowrise condominiums in the foreground
  • I think that panorama has to go, and although I'm not a fan of the one under the "Cityscape" section, it's decent and semi-up-to-date. I have a Sony α6500 so I'm probably going to take some pictures around town when thing get back in gear. Although getting good skyline pictures of Buffalo is a challenge... it's possible.
  • Are KeyBank Center and the Buffalo Savings Bank iconic enough to the community to warrant placement in the infobox?
  • Maybe the savings bank is, but the arena shouldn't be in there, especially an interior shot. I have a problem with every image in it besides the City Hall and the old county hall shots
  • The City Hall photograph should not have the obelisk in front; the Hayes Hall image is too blue and in shadow
  • I think the City Hall photo is at a bad angle, but many non-free pictures of Buffalo City Hall have the McKinley Monument. I think I could recreate a better version.
  • I recommend interactive maps in the infobox. I can implement this if you aren't familiar!
  • If you could do this that would be great
  • Activate CropTool so you can crop the white space out of the early map
  • Will do
  • Look through history books and online sources to make sure the history is fully cited. And there already is a History of Buffalo, New York article, so really this page should have a very short summary, as short as you can make it without removing key details.
  • Will do, so far the best portion of the History section is the first 1/4 that I worked on a few years ago and this past week. It's still not where I want it to be though.
  • Identify Buffalo in the satellite image's caption, like "2001 satellite image of the Niagara Peninsula; Buffalo is at the lower-right"
  • Will do
  • I would reduce the size of the skyline image. I used "upright=3.0" for Columbus to make it fit most laptop and desktop screens.
  • Will do
  • I see the religion section was trimmed down; though I am not religious I think nearly all of that content needs to stay, just find inline citations for it all.
  • That's a work in progress, a lot of what was there before had unreliable statistics from a website called BestPlaces. So I will just go through Google or wherever and find the information without statistics
  • Move the art gallery photo to the relevant section, and add another related to museums/attractions there
  • Will do
  • Buffalo is renowned for its parks? I would expect to see one or more images of lush landscapes in the "parks and recreation" section, not a lake and waterfront.
  • Yes, that will be tackled later
  • Will do
  • The public safety section should also cover crime and other issues. The Floyd protests thing does not seem worth mentioning here, perhaps just in the history article.
  • I was going to put crime under Demographics, but public safety makes sense as well. I'll probably remove the shoving thing because it's irrelevant.
  • In education, add images of any beautiful school buildings! Lots of opportunity for that. Same with the library.
  • Will do.
  • I'm noticing a lot of notable structures lack quality images, like City Hall, the library, the airport, some of the schools... I would be willing to help fund a better camera if you wish.
  • Thanks for the offer! As I said above though I have a brand new camera, I just have to get out of the house. Many editors around Buffalo seem to have potatoes for cameras, but that's no offense to them. Many pictures in the article are just too old, too saturated or too small.
These are my comments so far, a lot are about images as it helps with first impressions. I can give more advice as it progresses. ɱ (talk) 14:58, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
Thanks again for the advice. Buffaboy 18:34, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
@Buffaboy: You're welcome. Again, I strongly recommend reading through WP:USCITIES as well as FA articles like Briarcliff Manor to see what is appropriate, relevant, and what perhaps is missing. Peer review and the Guild of Copy Editors will really help once it's near-ready for FA review. I'll add in a mapframe map, do you prefer the example at Chicago, Toledo, Ohio, or Boston? Or I could try to make a mapframe version of the multiple-option map you have there now. One other thing, I know cities like Boston and Columbus are cities of neighborhoods. I'm not sure if Buffalo is, but if you feel that way, the collage in the lead should reflect that as best as you can. ɱ (talk) 18:50, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
  • @: Yes, I've had the guideline up which has helped a ton for filling in gaps. Minneapolis has been helpful so far but I will also have to take a look at Briarcliff Manor. I used the Guild of Copy Editors when I worked on Utica, New York 6 years ago, and was able to bring it to GA status. The Chicago map seems to be most appropriate for showing the relative position of the city with the rest of the country. And yes, Buffalo is a city of neighborhoods for the most part. I'll take this into consideration when redoing the montage. Buffaboy 19:19, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
Also I am curious, what makes the savings bank iconic enough for the lead? The article seems short, has a local architect, there's no NRHP or NHL listing. Sure it's a cool building but so is Buffalo Central Terminal? ɱ (talk) 18:54, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

Interactive maps

So at this point, I’m probably really annoying, so sorry. But I decided if relief maps are actually nonstandard, how can I implement interactive maps into an article? Before I do, I will describe that I am trying it out and if the community doesn’t like it, they can revert it. I guess I just really like the look of the physical geographic feel of the old maps. But I guess if people don’t like it, they don’t like it. Just to recap, how can I implement an interactive map into an article? Thanks. SkunkaMunka (talk) 03:22, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi, so it depends on the infobox. Evad37 is especially trying to have them automatically in infoboxes. Please see Misplaced Pages:Mapframe maps in infoboxes. For the infoboxes that have blue check marks, the interactive maps will either display automatically when coordinates are set up, or you might need a "| mapframe = yes" added in. For other pages, you'll need to add {{infobox mapframe}} to a map or image parameter, and customize it using the instructions at that template page. ɱ (talk) 17:16, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
Hi, So I was wondering if I could remove one of the maps on the Columbus article due to there already being one because the highway system can be viewed by zooming in on the map. I thought this was not ideal. One more thing, the interactive maps do not work at ALL in the mobile Misplaced Pages app. However, I have a solution but it's hard to describe, so please check my edits to see what you think. Thanks! SkunkaMunka (talk) 18:01, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

Sourcing request makes no sense

No sourcing is needed for those phrases in Killing of Ma'Khia Bryant. It is a summary of the following paragraph, which is sourced. Likewise, there is no need to introduce passive voice into the article. See Misplaced Pages:Manual_of_Style/Words_to_watch#Unsupported_attributions for more info. Follow-up request to Review Draft article on Jonathan Kaplan

Hi again. Since our last communication is now on an archived page I am starting a new discussion here. Thanks so much for looking over my draft. I took your suggestions seriously, and tried to adhere to them to the best of my ability. I wonder if you could once again take a look at the draft of Jonathan Kaplan (entrepreneur) and see if it now meets Misplaced Pages standards for inclusion. I appreciate your help. Thanks again. TalforJonKaplan (talk) 16:18, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

Okay new points:
  • Remove the references from the lead paragraph. They're not really needed and clutter it.
  • Add a second paragraph to the lead summarizing his early life/education and philanthropy, see articles on famous businessmen for examples.
  • Break the career information into two ro so paragraphs.
  • More to come... ɱ (talk) 18:39, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
Thank you once again for your ongoing input and helpful suggestions. I have implemented the last set of suggestions, and hope you can examine the draft and either promote it or tell me what more the article needs to be promoted to main space. I greatly appreciate your help. TalforJonKaplan (talk) 22:37, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
Hi Ɱ, This is a gentle nudge to ask you to kindly take a look at my edits, which follow closely your suggestions as outlined above. Thanks for taking the time to help improve the draft and get it into mainspace. TalforJonKaplan (talk) 18:16, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

Interactive map issues

Hello, so I noticed that these new interactive maps have some drawbacks. The first and most prominent one is that counties are not visible. This is something pushpin maps had, so that is one. The second one may be opinionated, so please correct me. You can only see the marker, instead of the title of the city/building. I don’t know if you have noticed, but on the mobile Misplaced Pages app, the maps don’t work at all. They are visible, however you can’t interact with them. Also, on any mobile version, including the website, the maps are stacked vertically. The infobox is confused with it and as a result is way too oversized. I hope you take these problems into consideration and look into my case. I am trying to implement these maps and trying my best to figure it out. Thanks for your time! SkunkaMunka (talk) 01:49, 14 June 2021 (UTC)

@SkunkaMunka:
"counties are not visible. This is something pushpin maps had, so that is one" - Where do you see counties in pushpin maps in articles? I mostly edit Ohio and New York articles, and any remaining Ohio pushpins only show the state, while New York still uses JPG type images, not even pushpins. All of this needs to be updated. And like I said, creating pushpin maps for all 3,143 counties in the U.S. would be an exhausting, endless process. Instead, it's relatively easy to add them in interactive maps. If there's ever a feature you're not sure exists or you don't know how to use, feel free to drop a comment in at Module talk:Mapframe.
"You can only see the marker, instead of the title of the city/building" - this is something that has been deprecated in maps. Titles get in the way of other important information, need to be formatted properly to fit in that tiny square of a map, and are pretty self-explanatory - looking at a city map, the dot highlights the city... As well, when you interact with the map full-screen, the marker can and should be set to then display the title when clicked on.
I don’t know if you have noticed, but on the mobile Misplaced Pages app, the maps don’t work at all. They are visible, however you can’t interact with them. Okay I can see that. The app is frustrating for a myriad of reasons, and you're best off reporting this to people who work on the app. I stopped using the app a long time ago because it really doesn't work for editors. Use mobile Misplaced Pages from a web browser like Chrome - it'll work just fine there.
Also, on any mobile version, including the website, the maps are stacked vertically. - this is just a bug when using the stack template, something I will look into fixing more, but it's just a bug on the few articles I've trialed it on.
Hope this helps. ɱ (talk) 19:28, 14 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi and Thank you for your time. I am assuming you misunderstood me. County lines are visible on the map itself, and the dot symbolizing the location is within that county. For example, take a look at this New Mexico photo. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/File:USA_New_Mexico_relief_location_map.svg#mw-jump-to-license The lines are clearly visible and it would be nice to have them in the new maps. Or as I had and idea where you can configure the maps, with a switch, to show the relief, as I prefer them. I’m sure some people do too. Again thanks! SkunkaMunka (talk) 20:25, 14 June 2021 (UTC)

@SkunkaMunka: I think these are wonderful suggestions. I do not have any knowledge or experience enough to implement them. I would suggest asking at Module talk:Mapframe or here. ɱ (talk) 21:52, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

App issue reporting

Hello, so I would like to report those errors to the mobile app developers that we discussed earlier. You said to do so, so where can I report these issues? Thanks! SkunkaMunka (talk) 21:32, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

Module talk:Mapframe for issues or help with the display/formatting within existing options or here for new ideas. ɱ (talk) 12:59, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

Ok, thanks, But I looked around, and the Columbus airport is the ONLY airport I found in the US on Misplaced Pages that has and interactive map. I have issues copying the source for these maps, and I am currently trying to implement them into Denver articles, but having no success. I don’t want to repeat the same drama we had a few months ago, but I can’t get anyone to respond on The mapframe module talk. In the meantime, I’m trying to think of a permanent solution. Thanks. SkunkaMunka (talk) 11:13, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

Also note, may I add county images to a couple Columbus articles? There’s no way to view them with interactive maps, and it’s my favorite thing about pushpins. Can you consider it? Thanks so much. SkunkaMunka (talk) 11:39, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

@SkunkaMunka: - the reason so few airports use mapframe right now is that nobody's been converting yet, as the feature is so new to the airport infobox. I had converted the other Columbus-area airports as well, and I believe a few other cities have begun to use mapframe... As for copying the code, all you have to do is remove the pushpin info and replace with "| mapframe = yes", it's really that simple. As for counties, yes that's a good addition needed for mapframe, but I likewise have a dozen "essential" requests for mapframe, and it's gonna be slow-going, we both need to be patient. In the meantime, mapframe is still far, far, far better than pushpin or image-based maps. For Columbus articles, counties seem pointless as Franklin County is almost entirely Columbus, but for other articles, sure, I can show you how to add another shape, like for a county, into a mapframe map. ɱ (talk) 13:55, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

I can’t seem to figure out where to place "| mapframe = yes", What info box should I place it in? SkunkaMunka (talk) 02:49, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

Which article(s) specifically are you looking to add it to? Different articles use different infoboxes. ɱ (talk) 17:23, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

Particuarly Denver articles, The Denver Article, Denver International Airport, and the Denver art museum. Also a couple Salt Lake City Articles. SkunkaMunka (talk) 18:09, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

It looks like the Denver art museum already has one, so that’s off the list. SkunkaMunka (talk) 18:11, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

@SkunkaMunka: Ok, sure:
  • It's easy for the airport. Literally all you have to do is write | mapframe = yes as one of the lines in the infobox. I would remove the pushpin map, and adjust the maplink zoom level by adding | mapframe-zoom = 8.
  • It's a little trickier for Denver right now. It uses {{Infobox settlement}} (which doesn't yet do things automatically). You have to replace at least the image map, and add some longer code:

| image_map = {{infobox mapframe}}

| map_caption = Interactive map of Denver's location

You'll see it displays a little off, but you can use {{maplink}} parameters to adjust the line width or color, zoom amount, etc. ɱ (talk) 17:57, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for your help! I didn't want the lines on the Denver article so I took some source from the Columbus article and modified it so it would be usable. However on both articles there is no marker showing until you click on the map. Is there a way I can fix this? SkunkaMunka (talk) 22:28, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
It takes a little bit for servers to get up to speed, usually within a few hours. They display fine now, yeah? ɱ (talk) 15:37, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

Yep! Thank you! SkunkaMunka (talk) 18:18, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

Ok, the DIA mapframe still does not have the marker on desktop. However, on mobile, it appears fine. What's happening? SkunkaMunka (talk) 17:51, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
Works fine for me, did you fix it? ɱ (talk) 13:53, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

Yes, I did. Thanks. My mapframe on Seattle is being reverted. Without starting a war, I’m going to the Seattle talk page and explaining how these maps are better. The reason I didn’t like these maps at first was due to these being way underused and therefore I thought these were irrelevant. I’m currently working on it, so thanks for bearing with me.

The Non-GMO Project

Please see me recent update to the The Non-GMO Project wiki. It should clear up the intent I had with my original edits, while more appropriately listing the RfC/GMO information. Sorry for any confusion. (Skoot13 (talk) 21:42, 29 September 2021 (UTC))

Replaceable fair use File:Columbus Railway, Power & Light office.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Columbus Railway, Power & Light office.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Misplaced Pages. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 00:53, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

Non-free use of File:Lincoln House (Lincoln, Massachusetts).jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Lincoln House (Lincoln, Massachusetts).jpg. However, there is a concern that the use of the image on Misplaced Pages may not meet the criteria required by Misplaced Pages:Non-free content. Details of this problem, and which specific criteria that the image may not meet, can be obtained by going to the image description page. If you feel that this image does meet those criteria, please place a note on the image description or talk page explaining why. Do not remove the {{di-fails NFCC}} tag itself.

An administrator will review this file within a few days, and having considered the opinions placed on the image page, may delete it in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion or remove the tag entirely. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 00:54, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
