How did you get so good?

I've been a long time user of wikipedia but I just signed up, and I looked at your user page and you have all these groups and awards and stuff and it made me feel bad. How do you do it? Did is just take time and you regularly editing articles that needed it and stuff? Shadow Blade 05:17, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your complements! I wouldn't describe myself as good per se, just hard-working. My current efforts are directed towards stopping vandalism and blocking abusive editors, with the ocassional contribution when time and opportunity permit! The userboxes on my user page are easy enough to find and add. I see from your user page that you are exploring that process too. Misplaced Pages:Userboxes is the place to go in order to find those in current use. Projects such as Esperanza have their own userboxes available for use if you decide to become a member. Like most things in this life, awards are either given on merit for work carried out; because you like the person or something that they have done; because you want to give one to yourself and there is no block against this in the system (there isn't). Some people like what I do enough to tell me so, for which I am most grateful! Many others probably pass on by without knowing that I exist, as vandalism can be reverted relatively easily. A small percentage disagree with my actions to such an extent that they want to disrupt me or Misplaced Pages in some way. Vandal fighting and edit reverting is a devisive issue - no one wants their hard work deleted, or to be told "those are the rules, sorry". You have to be prepared to put up with the backlash and also have to be prepared to examine your actions closely and be big enough to say "Sorry, I made a bad call". After all we are all human and have busy lives to lead, yes?
To answer your questions directly, experience can only be gained through time on WP. There are many places to gain experience; the article space; the project pages space, etc. Choose the places to explore that interest you and don't leap in straight away. Watch the interaction of the editors, read the Talk pages of articles and inform yourself as much as possible. You never stop learning on WP, even if all you ever do is read articles! Regular editing and contributing is a good thing but make sure you read the policies and guidelines first. Check out pages such as AfD too, in order to see how editors express their views and opinions and also interpret policies and guidelines. It can be quite an education! If you need any more help, please ask or go to Help or the help desk or village pump, all linked from the homepage too. Regards,  (aeropagitica)   (talk)    15:41, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Signature

Hi, I got my signature from that other guy that posted in your talk page. The guy with blue signature. Anyway, how do you archive pages?  Demonblade   (talk)  07:24, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Hmm, your signature does resemble mine quite closely. Anyway, to archive a Talk page, follow the instructions at Misplaced Pages:How to archive a talk page. I cut-and-paste mine in to a seperate page, creating the link on my Talk page first. Regards,  (aeropagitica)   (talk)    14:56, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

cool, thanks. Hey, how do I do it so that if I post a message in your talk page the post appears on my talk p[age too? Demonblade   (talk)  05:40, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Simple, you copy-and-paste the message from one Talk page to the other.  (aeropagitica)   (talk)

Dang, wikipedfia should have an automated process for doing that.  Demonblade   (talk)  10:23, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

OK, but I would like you to change your signature so that it doesn't appear to be a modified version of mine. Other users, such as Netsnipe have achieved this. There are as many variations as you can image from which to choose. Could you try on one of your pages, please?  (aeropagitica)   (talk)

Alright, I'll try. But our signatures look pretty different already.  Demonblade   (talk)  10:34, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

As the originator of the design, I would consider it courteous for you to try. Regards,  (aeropagitica)   (talk)

Is the new one ok?  Demonblade  (talk)  10:42, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Alright, I'll look around for other signatures.  Demonblade  (talk)  11:27, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
Gotta say - with a user name like Demonblade - I kinda expect the signature to be a bit more...dynamic? Like, maybe -

 Demonblade  ? DukeEgr93 04:44, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Which is not to say (aeropagitica) isn't dynamic as a name or as an editor! Just...different? (have I hit rock bottom and hauled out a pickaxe?) DukeEgr93 04:49, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
No insult taken from your comments! Let's confine sig development to the signatory's Talk page, though. Regards,  (aeropagitica)   (talk)  04:52, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

User:البجع

Notice you responded to this guys unblock request. Note his contribs are one of the popups using vandals who has reverted the articles to a very old version. --pgk 21:47, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Hello! What you say above is not clear to me. Do you mean that he is a vandal whose m.o. is to revert articles to very old versions, or that he is a person using popups to fight vandals who are reverting articles to old versions? Either way, the non-Latin characters in his username are just cause for a username block, WP:USERNAME refers.  (aeropagitica)   (talk)    21:51, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Sorry it wasn't clear. I meant the former, it is a vandal who is using popups to revert articles to very old versions. I realise the username block was fine just wanted to make sure you knew about such vandals. --pgk 21:54, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

No, I didn't know that people did such things, although it doesn't surprise me at all. Thanks for the heads up!  (aeropagitica)   (talk)

Question about comparing articles

When I'm logged out I can compare articles fine. Why is is that when I'm logged in and I click compare firefox pop up a windows telling me to download index.php?  Demonblade  (talk)  12:08, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

I don't know what the problem with your setup is. You might want to ask the question at Misplaced Pages:Village pump (technical), where someone may be able to help you. Regards,  (aeropagitica)   (talk)

Goldom's RFA thanks

Thank you for your support on my RFA, which closed successfully this morning with a result of (53/2/1). I've spent the day trying out the new tools, and trying not to mess things up too badly :). I was quite thrilled with all the support, both from the people I see around every day, as well as many users who I didn't know from before, yet wrote such wonderful things about me. I look forward to helping to serve all of you, and the project. Let me know if there's anything I can help you with. -Goldom ‽‽‽ 04:25, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Steve Heller

Hey A. Either you made a mistake here or you defied the majority of the opinions for whatever reason. I am ok with the latter possibility, but would feel more comfortable knowing that's the case. Thanks. - CrazyRussian talk/email 04:48, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Hello! It's more probable that I made a mistake than was genuinely defiant of the opinions expressed. I am only human and I have no axe to grind with any party around here! My thoughts on this article were that the author is clearly knowledgable about a particular field but that they haven't stated what their notable achievements in that field are. This being the case, AfD gives interested parties five days to update an article to the point of notability or beyond. As this hadn't happened according to the edit history I thought that, rather than losing the material altogether with a simple delete, it would be better off on the authors' user page, where it would give other editors an insight in to their contributions (C++ & Javascript). The article doesn't say anything about the books being notable achievements - my libraries have several dozen books on each subject. Are they standard works on the subject. Technical translation is an expensive business - does this push the author in to notable status? I thought not, so I went with the userfy advice. This was my reasoning but I am open to seeing it reversed! Regards,  (aeropagitica)   (talk)  06:54, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
The close is up at deletion review, could you provide a comment there? --Sam Blanning 10:31, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

I am ok with it - but apparently someone took it to DRV. Thank you for your explanation. - CrazyRussian talk/email 12:37, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Misplaced Pages, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Misplaced Pages:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
The last AC meeting (full log)
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Misplaced Pages:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Misplaced Pages talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Misplaced Pages:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Timeline of terrorism on deletion review

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Timeline of terrorism. Since you closed the deletion discussion for (or speedy-deleted) this article, your reasons on how or why you did so will be greatly appreciated in the above review. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MadMax (talkcontribs)

OK, I will create a user subpage for the information, a sandbox if you will.  (aeropagitica)   (talk)  16:40, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Shipwrecks of Western Australia

Just a courtesy call to let you know that I restored this article (deleted by you as {{db-nocontent}}) and added some more content to it. It's an important topic to us Western Australians, and I expect it will grow into a really great article in time. Snottygobble 23:32, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I am aware of shipwrecks such as the Batavia. The author stated on the Talk page that the article had accidentally gone live before content had been added, hence the {{db-nocontent}} tag.  (aeropagitica)   (talk)  04:42, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Speedy deletions

Hey there! I am a new admin just starting to work in CAT:CSD. A couple times today I noticed that you speedied articles that I was about to remove the tag from. For example, I was just about to remove the speedy tag from Soundmason when you deleted it. Can you explain to me why you deleted it? WP:SPEEDY says that neologisms are not elgible for speedy deletion. I'm not questioning your decision - just asking for clarification so I can understand the process better. --Aguerriero (talk) 17:21, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Hello! For that article, I used WP:SNOW and WP:IAR as a basis for my judgement. I have seen many neologisms entered in to the Articles for Deletion pages in the past. They are very nearly all unsourced, unverified and subjective words and as such the AfD process recommends delete rather than transwiki to Wiktionary. It is a judgement that arises out of experience, alongside evidence presented in the article. For instance, to quote the article;
"The word was coined by an anonymous female poster on an Internet message board. She is quoted above."
"Posts to bulletin boards, Usenet, and wikis, or messages left on blogs, should not be used as primary or secondary sources." Simple, really. Please ask if you have any more questions! Regards,  (aeropagitica)   (talk)  17:31, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Terrific, thanks for taking the time to explain! --Aguerriero (talk) 17:37, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages Research Survey Request

Misplaced Pages Research Survey Request

Hello, I am a member of a research group at Palo Alto Research Center (formerly known as Xerox PARC) studying how conflicts occur and resolve on Misplaced Pages. Due to your experience in conflict identification and resolution on Misplaced Pages as an administrator we’re extremely interested in your insights on this topic. We have a survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=201962477432 which we are inviting a few selected Wikipedians to participate in, and we would be extremely appreciative if you would take the time to complete it. As a token of our gratitude, we would like to present you with a PARC research star upon completion. Thank you for your time.

Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Tom Hess

BTW, there was mention of a tour in that article, which probably met the part of WP:MUSIC that says "Has gone on an international concert tour, or a national concert tour in at least one large or medium-sized country, reported in notable and verifiable sources." Friday (talk) 20:34, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Yes, HolyHell - a band yet to release their debut album - are supporting Manowar. The band may fulfill the national/international criteria for WP:Music notability but that doesn't mean that the individual members do. Perhaps if there is verifiable evidence of Tom Hess touring (inter)nationally as a solo artist then this criteria would also apply to him. No such evidence was presented at the time of deletion.  (aeropagitica)   (talk)  20:44, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Seems reasonable, thanks for the response. Friday (talk) 20:51, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Joe Kelly (Freeholder)

It's been over a week since the AfD closed, and no attempt has been made to expand the article beyond the expand tag. A lot of noise was generated on the related articles, Frank Finnerty and Sue Schilling, but that was based solely on the rapid renomination after the original 'no consensus' decision. If no work is done on the article, what is an acceptable delay before renominating? DarkAudit 16:06, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

This page states:
"In general, although there is no strict policy or consensus for a specific time between nominations, articles that have survived a nomination for deletion should not be immediately renominated. Please ensure that nominations to delete an article which was previously voted "keep", are carefully considered, and are based upon policy and not opinion."
You could theoretically renominate this page for AfD tomorrow, provided you can supply prima-facie evidence that it violates policy in some way. I would have a go at expanding the article first if you have an interest in the subject.  (aeropagitica)   (talk)  19:59, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

User:Zharta

Hi Aeropagitica, I'd like to talk with you about the block on this user. I believe its possible that I may be able to talk some sense into this one, so I'd like to consider lifting your block on him/her. The condition would be that if the user returns to adding nonsense to articles, I will reinstate the block without warning and with a longer duration (probably 1 week). Are you comfortable with this? Thanks, Gwernol 23:15, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Gwernol, thanks for backing me up on my talk page regarding this user. While I still feel that this person was knowingly vandalizing, I hope you don't feel I was too hasty in my decision to report him or her to AIV. I certainly hold myself responsible if the block is to be deemed inappropriate. That said, I will go along in complete agreement if this user is unblocked, and will continue to monitor him or her myself, if that's alright, while exercising neutrality and not rushing to any more conclusions. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 23:19, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Please understand that my request here is absolutely not a critisism of either of you. The block (and the request for it) were totally appropriate. The only reason I'm making this suggestion is that I see some glimmer of hope that we can make a productive editor out of Zharta. I could well be wrong about this, in which case it will only reflect poorly on me, not on either of you. Hopefully the worst case is we have to revert a few more nonsense edits, and the best case is we gain a valuable contributor. Best, Gwernol 23:39, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

OK, I will do so on the basis that Zharta is under your supervision. Regards,  (aeropagitica)   (talk)  04:55, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, much appreciated. Gwernol 12:07, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

{{welcomeemail}}

Hi (aeropagitica), like you I try to make an effort to notify users who register with an email addy that it's not a great idea - I use the {{welcomeemail}} template, but I noticed here that you use another that certainly is BOLD! I really like it, do you mind telling me what it's called at all please? Thanks in advance, - GIen 12:06, 23 August 2006 (UTC) (PS, thanks for your support too - official thank you is forthcoming :)

Well done on your successful RfA! My welcome e-mail template was adapted from a message that I saw on another users' page. I took the text from the standard {{welcomeemail}} and placed it within a message box, adding an exclamation mark image for effect. My effort can be found at User:(aeropagitica)/templates/welcomeemail should you want to link/copy-and-adapt for your own welcome salutations.
