Short selling

I'm glad you're doing well as a seasonal spread trader, but that's no reason to force-fit a note about it under "short selling.” --OwenX 17:26, 19 Jan 2005 (UTC)

The previous definition of short selling is out and out wrong. The definition should be universal and neutral. What you have there is a load of mis-information. It is misleading and untrue. It only applies to one small highly regulated use. Maybe you should change the name to something like “short selling (stocks only),” because it sure does not apply to real estate or normal businesses.

The current page says “In order to sell something short, one must borrow it from someone else.” Bill Gates did not have to borrow something from someone else, and he was selling short. How do you explain that?

I can sell 5,000 bushels of November Corn, I do not have to borrow anything. How can this page be true?

When Bill Gates sold an operating system he “did not have,” to IBM. Gates was selling short. He sold something before he bought it. He did not adhere to all these things this writer says. Short selling futures, real estate, and fungible property is a part of the Speculation business and it does not fit the current limited description used under this heading for selling short. GT

Suggestion

I hope you won't think me too rude for suggesting this but I think it might be useful for you to check out some of the pages on Misplaced Pages:Featured articles and see how the depth and breadth of topics that make up a wikipedia article. I have noticed you adding several "glossary style" entries which are more appropriate for wiktionary. For instance, wouldn't better to have a substantial on (financial) risk in all its forms rather than the current non-article about risk in the futures market? Pcb21| Pete 00:59, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Remark

Not that I care, but on Misplaced Pages you are not encouraged to delete contents from your talk page. You could archive it instead, that is, make a page like User talk:-oo0(GoldTrader)0oo-/Archive_1 and move the old stuff in there. Oleg Alexandrov

PS: Well, if you really want it you of course can delete things, that was just a recommandation. Oleg Alexandrov 23:24, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I thought history would hold it. GT
That's not quite the same thing. But well, I now tell you how to manage your own talk page. Never mind. Oleg Alexandrov 02:07, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of "Stanley Kroll"

A page you created, Stanley Kroll, has been tagged for deletion, as it meets one or more of the criteria for speedy deletion; specifically, it is about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how they are important or significant, and thus why they should be included in an encyclopedia. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and the guidelines for biographies in particular.

You are welcome to contribute content which complies with our content policies and any applicable inclusion guidelines. However, please do not simply re-create the page with the same content. You may also wish to read our introduction to editing and guide to writing your first article.

Thank you.  Blanchardb -- timed 02:12, 22 October 2008 (UTC) ---o0o---

Notability of Stanley Kroll

A tag has been placed on Stanley Kroll requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done because the article, which appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Misplaced Pages guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. -oo0(GoldTrader)0oo- (talk) 02:22, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Re: Cowboy hats

Go ahead and edit. This is a Wiki, after all. I don't see why you'd need to tell me -- I've never even edited the cowboy hat page.

If you feel you're about to make a sweeping or controversial edit, you can discuss it on the appropriate discussion page at Talk:Cowboy hat. rspεεr (talk) 09:46, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Works for me. I haven't touched that page in years. – ClockworkSoul 16:55, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Go ahead and edit the article. --Una Smith (talk) 22:37, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Your reply to me doesn't make sense. But anyway. It looks like you've got some information to add -- but be sure to back it up with references. One way to make a reference is to use tags that look like <ref>cite your source here</ref> after each fact. rspεεr (talk) 06:32, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi Gold, go ahead and keep sandboxing the article on the talk page. It's sort of in that in-between awkward stage but I think you are generally heading in the right direction (just be VERY careful to not replace one set of iffy material with a different set of iffy material) Watch ref formatting, too. See WP:CITE if you get hung up. I'm a bit busy right now to do much, but my suggestion is that as long as you have footnotes to sources that fit WP:V, you won't have a lot of problems. The problem in these articles arises when we find sources like "Joe's web page about stuff" that may be filled with a lot of myths and inaccuracies (for example, there are web sites claiming horses were domesticated 50,000 years ago, when in reality they were only domesticated about 5,000 years ago, but that inaccurate figure is all over the web on a lot of people's personal sites) Cowboy life pages in particular are full of this stuff. Much nonsense and mythos out there. My thinking is that when you have a rewritten intro, give me a shout for a final review before it goes into the article, likewise each following or rewritten new section. I'm at my best proofreading and wordsmithing right now, and if there is dubious research, I'm apt to spot it. But time, I don't have much. Other brushfires...sigh...Montanabw 20:06, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
Hi again, finally had a break from other crises to take a look at your work and for the most part liked your changes. Of course, I still edited relentlessly, as is my wont. I restored some photos, added another, and also reinserted a new version of the old intro. However, very little material of yours was actually tossed, mostly just rearranged a bit and cleaned up per wiki MOS and my own wordsmithing concepts. I also threw out some old stuff from before your edits that was either repetitive or had just been bugging me for awhile. See the talk page of the cowboy hat article to further understand what I was up to, and feel free to discuss my changes to your changes there! I was delighted to see all your source material and I most sincerely hope you consider my edits as a good faith attempt to continue to improve the article. You did a lot of GREAT work, and I thank you. Montanabw 06:29, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Moving discussion over to cowboy hat page, I think will be easier than jumping around on multiple talk pages. Answer is there. Montanabw 07:43, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Hey Gold, I know we need to get more cross-links to your Boss of the plains article, but putting links to clothing articles, where there are no links to all the other regalia, doesn't quite work. I didn't toss the links to be mean, you just need to find more specific articles...have you checked the categories and the western wear article? Montanabw 05:54, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Joseph commodity trader

Greetings, GoldTrader! Your comment titled Joseph commodity trader was placed on the Talk page that disambiguates pages about the name Joseph. It seems to belong on the Talk page for the article on the biblical Joseph. I suggest you move it there where it will get the attention you intended. If you have difficulty doing this and require assistance, leave me a note here and I'll get back to you. -- Deborahjay (talk) 12:29, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Driving glove

The article Driving glove has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

nothing here that is notable and not covered already by existing articles on Gloves.

While all contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. noq (talk) 12:56, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

Auto Racing

You are replying to five year old comments. There is not a lot point in reply to questions that old. The questioners have either long since left wikipedia, or found resolutions by other means. --Falcadore (talk) 01:56, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Anyone doing research is going to find those posts. What do you think we should do, remove them unanswered?

-oo0(GoldTrader)0oo- (talk) 03:09, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

People doing research aren't going to be looking at the talk pages. And those who do would understand would understand what the talk pages is for and not expect to look for answers there for questions that old. I was merely pointing out the level of relevance of your actions. Five years late is still five years late. --Falcadore (talk) 03:49, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Welcome to Misplaced Pages! I am glad to see you are interested in discussing a topic. However, as a general rule, talk pages such as Talk:Street racing are for discussion related to improving the article, not general discussion about the topic. If you have specific questions about certain topics, consider visiting our reference desk and asking them there instead of on article talk pages.
