Y Bih Alêô (born 1901 in Buôn Niêng, Ea Nuôl, Buôn Ma Thuột – died 1987) is an Vietnamese Rade ethnic intellectual and military man. Trained by the French at the Pháp–Đê Elementary School in Buôn Ma Thuột, it later joined the resistance movement led by Y Jut and Y Ut, against the French. After that, he worked as an interpreter for the French, served as a green loincloth soldier, and rose to the rank of commander of the Bảo An Binh Battalion. Working as a squad leader during this time, he met a number of political prisoners in prison and was inspired by them.

Military career

After the coup of the Japanese on 9 March 1945, he sided with the Việt Minh. When Japan surrendered, a number of figures urged the Montagnards to occupy the French administrative and military facilities abandoned by Japan and participated in the temporary administrative committee. The Dak Lak National Salvation Army Battalion (Vietnamese: Cứu Quốc Quân Đắk Lắk) he led, participated in many major battles in the Central Highlands.

In 1946, French troops took turns retaking the major cities of the Central Highlands. He was arrested for joining the Việt Minh, sentenced and imprisoned. When he was released from prison, he returned to his village and was used again by the French as a volunteer due to a men shortage.

In October 1960, the Central Highlands National Autonomus Movement. He was also part of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam of Vietnam, and later became the vice president of the Southern Liberation Front. Then until after 1975, he worked for the Front in the Central Highlands.

He died on 20 January 1987 due to the illness he suffered from in his hometown.

Awards

Y Bih Alêô has been awarded many noble awards, such as the Medal of Freedom (first class), the Anti-French Resistance War Medal (first class), Anti-American Resistance War Medal (first class), and Great Solidarity Medal. A street is named after him in Buôn Ma Thuột.
