Yeshiva L'zeirim Tiferes Yaacov (Hebrew: ישיבה לצעירים תפארת יעקב), known informally as Yeshiva Ketana, is a yeshiva located in Gateshead, England. It caters to post-high school students aged 15–18, providing a bridge between secondary education and advanced Talmudic study in yeshiva gedolah.
History
Yeshiva L'zeirim Tiferes Yaacov was established in 1977 with the aim of easing the transition for young students into the demanding world of full-time Yeshiva learning. The Yeshiva emphasizes a supportive environment where students can acclimate to the intensity of traditional Jewish scholarship at their own pace. It started with an initial eight students.
Educational Approach
Tiferes Yaacov offers a unique educational approach, combining the breadth of a large Yeshiva with the personalized attention more typical of smaller institutions. This is achieved through:
- Small, personalized Shiurim (lectures): These allow for close interaction with Rebbeim (teachers/rabbis) and foster a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
- High Rebbe to Talmid (student) ratio: This ensures that each student receives individual guidance and mentorship.
- Emphasis on personal connection: The Yeshiva strives to create enduring relationships between students and their Rebbeim.
The educational philosophy of Tiferes Yaacov is rooted in the belief that young adults require a strong foundation in their faith and a positive Jewish identity to navigate the challenges of the modern world.
Campus
In July 2024, Yeshiva L'zeirim Tiferes Yaacov acquired a new campus — the former Swallow Hotel building in Gateshead.
Alumni
The Yeshiva boasts a large network of alumni who maintain strong connections with the institution, a testament to the warm and nurturing atmosphere fostered at Tiferes Yaacov.
