User talk here is not archived. Old talk is deleted. Users are allowed to remove anything from their talk pages. See WP:TALK and other wikipedia guidelines/policies. Like Misplaced Pages articles over time, people change, and there is little point in referring to past stale arguments and discussions.

To keep the discussion in one thread some comments added here are moved to the user talk page of the author. I reply there. I also watchlist that talk page for awhile in order to note when the user there replies. Harassing comments are also sometimes moved off this talk page. Sometimes the original author is offended by their own harassing comments, and my reply, on their user talk page. They then remove both from their talk page. I guess the light from their own verbal reflection offends them. One can find removed comments by using the history link on a talk page. Inappropriately-applied warning templates, etc.. are also removed from this talk page.

dictators category may end up POV

How are we supposed to decide who is a dictator and who isn't? In some cases it's clear, but in others it's disputed, making the category POV. Maybe it would be best to just include people who used the term "Dictator" or a variant in their official title? - TheMightyQuill (talk) 14:24, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Categories in World War II

I am currently reviewing and upgrading Second World War categories. The two you selected, casualties and crimes, are currently ambiguous and do not satisfy all the articles. For example there were military and civilian casualties, and there were crimes against civilians, economic and political criminals and crimes against military forces by their opponents (treatment of POWs). I will be creating appropriate sub-categories in due course, so please be patient and allow me work this out, which may take more then a few days. I will try not to rename too many categories in the process so people will still be able to use the categories they are familiar with, and any renaming will be announced in the project talk. Cheers--mrg3105 (comms) ♠07:33, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

RE:the Bulge

My reasoning behind it was, that anyone trying to look up similar articles will have been looking for these categories at the bottom of this page, not in the Battle of the Bulge category. Personally, I believe that the categories should remain at the bottom of the Battle of the Bulge article. Woody (talk) 14:45, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Upload pages

At WP:AN, you wrote:

Thanks Transhumanist for your efforts. I have seen a need for a long time for many improvements to the many upload pages on Misplaced Pages and the Commons. Getting changes made via the talk pages is like pulling teeth sometimes. Many people just give up. If nothing else your discussion here may have gotten a few more admins to pay attention to the talk page requests for changes. I hope more admins watchlist the many talk pages listed in the tables at the top of these pages:
Misplaced Pages talk:Upload
commons:Commons talk:Upload
I created those tables as a result of similar frustrations I had.
I also created Misplaced Pages talk:Upload/Sandbox - This sandbox idea may be better than other sandboxes since it is directly connected to the main talk page.
I don't see any problem though with also opening up the Misplaced Pages upload pages themselves to semi-protection now and then at the request of experienced editors.
commons:Commons:Upload has been at semi-protection without problems for a long time. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:58, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

You're welcome. If there's ever anything else you need help with, let me know, and I'll see if I can make time to assist.

Misplaced Pages:Upload is currently semi-protected. I've contacted others who posted concerns on the talk page, to let them know the page is live.

Concerning your table at the top of Misplaced Pages talk:Upload, you should take another look at it. ;) It's been transformed.

User:Remember the dot has opened up the upload forms to editing, by moving them to the Misplaced Pages namespace, and then User:Ilmari Karonen followed-up and made the moved pages operational by transcluding them back onto the original Mediawiki pages.

That's a step in the right direction.

But we should definitely keep a closer watch on the upload forms now.

I don't have time to work on them much now, but I'll get on there to proofread/copy-edit them as I find the time, with the same carefulness I've applied on Misplaced Pages:Upload.

Cheers.

Speedy deletion of Image:My Lai massacre.jpg

A tag has been placed on Image:My Lai massacre.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section I8 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons under the same name, or all references to the image on Misplaced Pages have been updated to point to the title used at Commons.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on ] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. sanawon 01:07, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Category split

Since in the past months and just recently articles on Palestinian localities in the West Bank have risen considerably, I think we should finally split the Category:Towns and villages in the West Bank into Municipalities in the West Bank (Beit Ummar, Aqraba, Deir al-Ghusun, Tammun, etc.) and Village councils in the West Bank (Jifna, Einabus, Deir al-Hatab, Tayasir, etc.). How would we get all of this sorted? --Al Ameer son (talk) 17:40, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

I took a look at the categories and most are organized as "Cities in XXX", "Towns in XXX" and "Villages in XXX". Israel replaces the "Towns" portion with "Local councils". For Palestinian localities, I think it's easiest and best to use the "Cities, towns and villages" cat. So we should split the "Towns and villages in the West Bank" to "Category:Towns in the West Bank" and "Category:Villages in the West Bank". What do you think? --Al Ameer son (talk) 14:06, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Well at first I wanted to use Cities, Municipalities and Village councils but the former two are intertwined. It's best just to use the Cities, Towns and Villages format. Should we request a split? By the way if you would like I could list all of the Palestinian localities that are not villages so when a cat-bot needs to edit the cats in the article it would know what's a village and what's a town. --Al Ameer son (talk) 14:42, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Actually the PNA's Ministry of Local Government states that cities ("centers of governorates") have populations over 10,000 and councils of 15 members, municipalities B have populations of 8,000-10,000 and councils of 13 members, municipalities C have populations of 4,000-8,000 and councils of 11 members, municipalities D ("village councils") have populations of 1,000-4,000 and councils of 7-9 members. Look at the table in this site under the title of Municipal Organization in the PNA in 2000. --Al Ameer son (talk) 03:04, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

If you look at the far right side of that same chart you will see that in parentheses Municipalities D are called "village councils" (Jifna, Qarawat Bani Hassan) and Municipalities A are called "center of governorates" aka cities (Nablus, Ramallah, Khan Yunis). So instead of using Muns A or D for a subcat name we could use "Cities" and "Village councils". As for Muns B and C the name in parentheses is not very blunt, so I think it's safe we just use "Municipalities" for a subcat name to cover those two types of localities (Yabad, Aqraba, Abasan al-Kabera). --Al Ameer son (talk) 18:15, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

I completely agree with your suggestion. Let's just do that then. However, the population in parentheses doesn't need to be included in the cat. If all is agreed, how would we make the change (we need a bot to recategorize all of the articles which number almost 250). --Al Ameer son (talk) 19:08, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Shouldn't we first rename the current category to Category:Towns in the West Bank and make a new one for Category:Villages in the West Bank? As for the list, I could make it anytime. --Al Ameer son (talk) 19:28, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I know only admins could do it after a CfD. I like what you're suggesting that we go ahead and create a new called Villages in the West Bank and nominate the current one for a name change. I'll start the new cat now and will make the list but when we get a bot. --Al Ameer son (talk) 19:48, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

I finished the Ramallah and al-Bireh Governorate, Jericho Governorate, Tubas Governorate, Hebron Governorate and the governorates of the Gaza Strip (started Category:Villages in the Gaza Strip. We still got a crap-load more villages in the Nablus Governorate, Qalqilya Governorate, Tulkarm Governorate, Jenin Governorate, Bethlehem Governorate, Salfit Governorate and Jerusalem Governorate. We don't need a bot, we'll just take care of it ourselves. --Al Ameer son (talk) 22:38, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Question: Should we just add Local Development Committees like al-Fasayil, Deir Razih and Jab'a to the Villages category? --Al Ameer son (talk) 03:09, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:ISBN

Hi, you made some edits to the WP:ISBN page late last year and added an example, "Here is random book listing where one can find these 2 ISBN numbers". When I click that example link, I get an error message from Amazon. Can you fix that? It looks like you may have been showing a wildcard technique to return two different ISBN's from the same query, so I'm not sure how to fix it myself. Thanks! Timeshifter, it was me who change the colours

Jewish villages depopulated during the 1948 Palestine war
Behind 1949 armistice lines:

Palestinian Arab villages depopulated during the 1948 Palestine war

I use the same font-colour as in the villages-boxes. Then it is the same design. I personally think it very nice, and more smootk, than the sharp black. It is also clever spin to choose "Palestine Remembered" as the title, because Icehockey don't like it, and the flag becomes relevant by having the country name next to it. I would say give it a try, and see if you don't like it. And then you could set a 'Keep' stamp in the discussion about the infobox, if you judge it relevant. I personally think it will fizzlew out in the sand, as no consensus can be reached, and I can anyway quicly design a similar in the same colours, which is what I like about it, and the reason why I made it in the first place. 2nd intifadah

Sorry I can't help there. My presence only seems to exacerbate tensions. By the way, Camp David was convened because a deadline had been set for a comprehensive Israeli-Palestinian agreement by I think 13 September 2000 in the Sharm al-Sheikh Memorandun of the preceding year. Talks repeatedly broke down through Feb and March 2000, and Arafat had set Sept 10th as the day for the proclamation of Palestinian statehood. Ten Days before Sharon's walk, a solemn memorial day commemorating the victims of the Shatila camp massacre two decades earlier had taken place, a massacre for which Sharon was held responsible, hence the reaction to his walk on the Temple Mount 10 days later. There are many things like this behind the intifada, that explain the intense frustrations of promises of statehood endlessly deferred in the Palestinian perspective, and one reason why you are right to be careful over the lead: if Camp David, then also these things, if these things, then others, and the lead becomes awkward. Since this is a comment about editors, not about the article, I suggest that user talk pages are a better place for it, for more than one reason; also, you can find wording to refer to such a phenomenon in a more NPOV and courteous way.
