"Lips Are Movin" is a song recorded by American singer Meghan Trainor for her debut studio album, Title (2015). Co-written by Trainor and Kevin Kadish, the song was produced by Kadish and released as Trainor's second single on October 21, 2014 by Epic Records. "Lips Are Movin" is a bubblegum pop, doo-wop song consisting of a throwback style rhythm along with elements of hip hop. The lyrics tell of a cheating, lying, boyfriend and the assets of the girl he betrayed.

"Lips Are Movin" received positive reviews from music critics, many of whom compared it to Trainor's previous single, "All About That Bass", while others felt the song eliminated Trainor's one-hit wonder status and established her as a rival for current successful female pop acts. It follows a half-sung, half-rapped format, and comprises a retro-soul melody, beat and percussion-heavy arrangement. Comprised of a throwback style rhythm and elements of hip hop music, the song's upbeat tempo and feel along with Trainor's delivery has been described as "feisty," "spunky" and "sassy". According to James Cowan of Canadian Business, the song shares the same girl group-influenced harmonies, wry lyrics and candy palette of its predecessor, "All About That Bass". Musically, "Lips Are Movin" was likened to Christina Aguilera's "Candyman" (2007). "Lips Are Movin" is set in the time signature of common time, with a tempo of 139 beats per minute. Background and concept

"We definitely wanted to make something as big and fun as video. We were able to make something at the end of the day that I am really proud of and excited to show to the world. Les Twins are incredible, I watch their videos all the time. I have been following Marcus and Cody Johns since their first Vine, and Mei—who did my nails for the video—is so incredibly talented. I'm excited we were the first to make a music video this way, by tying in all the innovators and influencers. But it still feels very 'Meghan Trainor,' which is amazing!"

The accompanying music video for "Lips Are Movin" was filmed in Los Angeles and directed by Philip Andelman. It premiered on Trainor's Vevo account on November 19, 2014. Speaking to MTV News, Trainor described the clip as "Here's me being sassy and other people dancing with me and having just a good time and trying to get through this feeling of, Ugh he's cheating on me again". The singer went on to highlight that the visual's aim was to portray a story of "I know you're lying, but that's OK because I'm gonna find the next guy. I'm good." The video was commissioned by information technology corporation Hewlett-Packard, as part of their campaign to promote their HP Pavilion product. However, product placement in the clip is minimal, with the Pavilion making a brief appearance in the video's initial frames, and then reappearing as a supporting player throughout. The advertising agency responsible for the clip's creation, 180LA, recruited several "influencers" for its shooting—dancers, set designers and actors with large social media followings that would guarantee the music video being shared with their audiences. The influencers featured in the video include American set designer Bri Emery, American actors Marcus Johns, Cody Johns and Robby Ayala, French dancers Les Twins, Spanish stylist Sara Escudero, American hair stylist Kristin Ess, Japanese nail artist Mei Kawajiri, American dancer Chachi Gonzales, and Pomeranian Barkley the Pom. During the filming, a dancer from Houston recorded her choreography online, attaining suggestions from her fans, some of whom were later invited to star in the video. The script communicated the influencers' involvement. Andelman suggested showcasing behind-the-scenes of a music-video shoot—which ended up being the video's framework. Trainor's team asked 180LA to evolve the look of the "All About That Bass" music video without straying too far from it. Epic president Sylvia Rhone spoke of the clip in an interview, mentioning:

Synopsis

The music video for "Lips Are Movin" featured many social media influencers. The pair of lips in the backdrop received comparisons to some visuals for The Rocky Horror Show.

The music video follows a simple premise: Trainor is found singing into a lip-themed microphone afront a pastel blue wall, sometimes flanked by some backup dancers, lip-featured television screens. Pairs of lips serve as prominent features throughout the video, of which include closeups of Trainor's mouth and a drawing of a large pair as a backdrop against a wall, which was compared to that of the musical The Rocky Horror Show, by Yahoo! writer Lyndsey Parker. Trainor is also seen reclining on a couch in the shape of lips, which Parker compared to the sofas used for reality show So You Think You Can Dance. The singer also sports lip-shaped earrings and sunglasses for some of her outfits. The clip durates on a quickly changing set, with props being lifted on and off screen by workers throughout the entire clip. The workers, however, are the video's featured social media stars who Trainor interacts with.

Reception

The music video drew in over 2,500,000 YouTube views in less than two days. Billboard writer Andrew Hampp wrote that its production was a "historic milestone in the realm of YouTube creators." The visuals are the first music video ever to be created entirely by social influencers. According to Andrew Hampp of Billboard, its release resulted in an 11% increase in Trainor's Twitter followers, 15.8% growth in Facebook fans, 41.3% increase in Instagram followers and an estimated doubling of her Vine followers. James Cowan of Canadian Business opined, "Cynics will view this as a decidedly stodgy brand trying to make itself hip by hanging out with cool kids," adding, "But a less-jaded eye might call it something else—arts patronage for the 21st century." Writing for music website Idolator, Bradley Stern called it as "squeaky-clean visual," and praised its bright and colorful imagery. Daily Express writer Stefan Kyriazis deemed the music video "red hot", while MTV UK wrote that the clip continued the bubbly, bright themes of Trainor's "All About That Bass" video, and noted that the singer's sequinned kitty top resembled the one American singer Katy Perry wore for the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards. Yahoo! writer Lyndsey Parker acclaimed Trainor's fashion in the clip and quipped that the video "seems to be an unofficial campaign to land her own M.A.C. Viva Glam endorsement deal". Fuse's Hilary Hughes felt that the visual was a bold and sassy sentiment, and stated that its style shift from the "All About That Bass" clip "definitely made a statement". Hughes went on to describe the video's dance routine as "fierce" and commented, "'Lips Are Movin' is a super-meta technicolor dance party, complete with confetti, pop art and the endearing self-awareness Meghan brings to each track". Mashable's Brian Anthony Hernandez opined, "The visuals are what you would expect from a bouncy pop song: young dancers, colorful backgrounds, quirky outfits and exaggerated expressions." AXS's Scott Shelter wrote that the visual was "every bit as playful, bright and fun" as the one for "All About That Bass".

Trainor performed "Lips Are Movin" live on NBC's The Today Show on November 5, 2014. She later reprised the song during Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. On November 26, 2014, Trainor performed a medley of "Lips Are Movin" and "All About That Bass" on the final of the nineteenth season of American series Dancing with the Stars. The singer also performed the track as part of her set for the Jingle Ball Tour 2014. On December 17, 2014, Trainor performed "Lips Are Movin" on the final of the seventh season of the American series The Voice. Jaskiran Kaur of the International Business Times wrote that the performance "left everyone surprised".
