4. The 7 October attacks were planned by Hamas and led by their militant wing the Al-Qassam Brigades, but at least 3 other groups also took part on the day. The other 3 factions were a second Sunni Islamist group Palestinian Islamic Jihad's militant wing Saraya Al-Quds, and two much smaller Marxists / Nationalist factions the PFLP and DFLP. After the attacks Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) claimed they were holding at least 30 hostages. A small number of hostages, including the youngest, were only ever publicly described as being held by "other groups" - this could have been the PFLP or DFLP.
5. Attendance at the festival was reported to be 3,500 but figures vary. After the attack, relatives searching for missing loved ones said more than one thousand were at the event at the time of the attack. Some festival attendees estimated 3,000–4,000 people. An emergency medic who responded to the massacre at the festival placed attendance at 3,000.
6. There were at least two additional soldiers on duty that day who survived.
7. Several of the prisoners have died, “it is known that some of the detainees died in the facility. The circumstances of their deaths are yet to be clarified; according to the IDF, they are terrorists, and the matter is under investigation."

Early in the morning of 7 October 2023, approximately 3000 militants, from Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the PFLP, and DFLP, breached the Gaza fence and attacked multiple locations in Southern Israel. Following this the IDF blckaided, bombed, and then invaded the Gaza Strip.
