"Lips Are Movin"
Song

"Lips Are Movin" is a song recorded by American singer Meghan Trainor for her debut studio album, Title (2015). Co-written by Trainor and Kevin Kadish, the song was produced by Kadish and released as Trainor's second single on October 21, 2014 by Epic Records. "Lips Are Movin" is a bubblegum pop, doo-wop song consisting of a throwback style rhythm along with elements of hip hop. The lyrics tell of a cheating, lying, boyfriend and the assets of the girl he betrayed.

"Lips Are Movin" received positive reviews from music critics, many of whom compared it to Trainor's previous single, "All About That Bass", while others felt the song eliminated Trainor's one-hit wonder status and established her as a rival for current successful female pop acts. Commercially, "Lips Are Movin" became Trainor's second consecutive single to reach the top five in Australia and on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, where it has peaked at numbers three and four respectively. It also marked the singer's third top ten hit in New Zealand, where it reached number five.

The single release of "Lips Are Movin" coincided with the release of a music video of the song directed by Philip Andelman and commissioned by Hewlett-Packard. Mimicking what takes place behind-the-scenes of a music video shoot, the video features dancers Les Twins and Chachi Gonzales. The clip premiered on November 19, 2014 and drew in over 2.5 million YouTube views in less than two days. Trainor has performed "Lips Are Movin", live on American television programs The Today Show, The Voice and Dancing with the Stars.

"Lips Are Movin" is a bubblegum pop, doo-wop song which runs for a duration of three minutes and one second (3:01). It follows a half-sung, half-rapped format, and comprises a retro-soul melody, beat and percussion-heavy arrangement. Comprised of a throwback style rhythm and elements of hip hop music, the song's upbeat tempo and feel along with Trainor's delivery has been described as "feisty," "spunky" and "sassy". According to James Cowan of Canadian Business, the song shares the same girl group-influenced harmonies, wry lyrics and candy palette of its predecessor, "All About That Bass". Musically, "Lips Are Movin" was likened to Christina Aguilera's "Candyman" (2007). "Lips Are Movin" is set in the time signature of common time, with a tempo of 139 beats per minute. It is composed in the key of G major with Trainor's vocals spanning the tonal nodes of F3 to G5. The song follows a basic sequence of G–Am–C–G as its chord progression.

Kevin Kadish produced and co-wrote "Lips Are Movin".

According to Morgan Friedman of Seventeen, the lyrics tell of a cheating, lying, boyfriend: "If your lips are movin', then you're lyin', lyin', lyin, babe." According to Mark Innocencio of RyanSeacrest.com, Trainor asserts her irreplaceable assets in the lyrics, "Tell me that you're not just about this bass / you really think I could be replaced / nah, I come from outer space / and I'm a classy girl, I'mma hold it up", and the lyrics debut Trainor's unknown side as a human lie detector as she dismissed her sweet nothing-filled relationship with the lyrics, "I gave you bass, You gave me sweet talk / saying how I'm your number one but I know you lie / cause your lips are moving / baby don't you know I'm done". The song references "All About That Bass" with the lyrics "I gave you bass" and "Tell me that you're not just about this bass". AXS' Chase Hunt suggests that "Lips Are Movin" cements Trainor's message as a fully confident woman that is not willing to accept being mishandled by a man. He wrote that Trainor "gets right to the point" in the song's first verse, saying the relationship is overdue and that it is time to go find someone new. Hunt concluded his analysis, commenting, "Having no sympathy for his tears, she's taking no gifts because she's just flat out done." "Lips Are Movin" was co-written by Meghan Trainor and Kevin Kadish, and produced by the latter. The pair wrote the song in eight minutes.

In October 2014, "Title" and "Dear Future Husband" were both planned to be Trainor's second single. However, on October 14, 2014 the single artwork and a low-quality audio of "Lips Are Movin" surfaced online. The same day, it was announced that "Lips Are Movin" would be officially released to contemporary hit radio in the United States on October 21, 2014 as Trainor's second single instead. It was also offered as a "first listen" on Shazam, while the high-quality audio of the song was premiered by MTV on their website on October 15, 2014. According to Mediabase, the song garnered radio play from three monitored stations the same day, six days before the track's release. The song was released as a digital download on the same date in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. It was later released as an "instant grat" from the pre-order of Title worldwide, except for the United Kingdom where it will be made available for digital download on January 18, 2015.

Reception

"Lips Are Movin" garnered generally positive reviews from music critics, who compared it to Trainor's previous single, "All About That Bass". Idolator's Bradley Stern commented that the song was an "equally breezy selection" as its predecessor, while Mike Wass of the same website wrote, "Meghan might be covering old territory but it's still very catchy and sounds like a hit". Christina Garibaldi of MTV News deemed "Lips Are Movin" a catchy ladies' anthem that was destined to become a hit for Trainor. Sugarscape writer Carl Smith commended the song's retro influence and "sassy" lyrics. 4Music's Jessica Lever dubbed it as "another pop classic," adding, "With the same sass as her debut song, we're sure this one's also going to rock the music world." Billboard staff stated that "Lips Are Movin" being in the same vein as its predecessor, spelled great things for the song. Megan Friedman of Seventeen praised its "cheeky" references to "All About That Bass," and quipped, "When you need a pick-me-up song to help you brush off the haters, you can count on Meghan Trainor". A writer for VH1 commented, "For all the ladies who've been waiting for a new kick-ass song to croon and soothe your heartbreaks, this one by Trainor will surely leave you singing and dancing along too." Stefan Kyriazis of the Daily Express said "Lips Are Movin" manifested that Trainor was not a one-hit wonder, but a "new breed of pop star". In his review of the song, Kyriazis deemed the track "insanely catchy" and went on to quip, "While it's the lads who take a drubbing in the song, it's Meghan's fellow pop stars who should be looking over the shoulders." Mashable's Brian Anthony Hernandez shared Kyriazis' view, opining that the track was a catchy follow-up, and one that could keep Trainor from joining "music's long list of one-hit wonders". Brian Mansfield of USA Today commented that "Lips Are Movin" was a better record than "All About That Bass" and agreed that the latter would not be the singer's only hit. Sarah Lipoff of PopSugar ranked "Lips Are Movin" as the ninth best song of 2014. Nolan Feeney of Time reported the track sounded too similar to its predecessor, and commented, "From its retro sound to its handclaps and post-chorus chant, 'Lips Are Movin' seems designed to milk the success of her breakout hit". On the negative side, Ben Rayner of the Toronto Star said that the song is "... whitewashed into a fairly anodyne mush ... the hip-hop bump and plush basslines that intrude ... are pure cosmetic window dressing".

A few hours after the premiere of "Lips Are Movin" on October 15, 2014, it ascended to number four on the Billboard Twitter Trending 140 chart in the United States. "Lips Are Movin" debuted at number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100 issued for November 8, 2014. Upon its Mainstream Top 40 impact, the song became the "Most Added" at the radio format that week. The song registered a 70–50 climb in its third week. On December 10, 2014, "Lips Are Movin" rose 13–8. Its climb was aided by a 8–5 position and 2% rise on Digital Songs (110,000 copies), 13–7 position and 20% rise on Streaming Songs (7.8 million streams), and a 44–36 and 26% climb on Radio Songs (36 million radio audience). The song has since attained a peak of number four on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Trainor's second consecutive top five hit in the United States. It peaked at number 15 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart. In Canada, "Lips Are Movin" debuted at number 71 on the Canadian Hot 100 issued November 22, 2014. The single has since peaked at number eight.

"Lips Are Movin" debuted at number seven on the Australian Singles Chart on November 9, 2014. The song reached a peak of number three the following week, and has since spent a total of seven weeks within the chart's top 10. It marks Trainor's second consecutive top three single in Australia, and has been certified platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) for sales of 70,000 copies. "Lips Are Movin" entered the New Zealand Singles Chart at number 30 on November 10, 2014. In its sixth week, the song registered a 21–8 climb and has since peaked at number five, becoming Trainor's third consecutive top ten hit in the country. The song debuted at number 96 on the Irish Singles Chart issued for November 20, 2014, and has so far attained a peak of number 62. Elsewhere in Europe, "Lips Are Movin" has so far peaked within the top 20 in the Czech Republic, Netherlands, and Slovakia.

Music video

Background and concept

"We definitely wanted to make something as big and fun as video. We were able to make something at the end of the day that I am really proud of and excited to show to the world. Les Twins are incredible, I watch their videos all the time. I have been following Marcus and Cody Johns since their first Vine, and Mei—who did my nails for the video—is so incredibly talented. I'm excited we were the first to make a music video this way, by tying in all the innovators and influencers. But it still feels very 'Meghan Trainor,' which is amazing!"

—Trainor explaining the concept for the music video.

The accompanying music video for "Lips Are Movin" was filmed in Los Angeles and directed by Philip Andelman. It premiered on Trainor's Vevo account on November 19, 2014. Speaking to MTV News, Trainor described the clip as "Here's me being sassy and other people dancing with me and having just a good time and trying to get through this feeling of, Ugh he's cheating on me again". The singer went on to highlight that the visual's aim was to portray a story of "I know you're lying, but that's OK because I'm gonna find the next guy. I'm good." The video was commissioned by information technology corporation Hewlett-Packard, as part of their campaign to promote their HP Pavilion product. However, product placement in the clip is minimal, with the Pavilion making a brief appearance in the video's initial frames, and then reappearing as a supporting player throughout. The advertising agency responsible for the clip's creation, 180LA, recruited several "influencers" for its shooting—dancers, set designers and actors with large social media followings that would guarantee the music video being shared with their audiences. The influencers featured in the video include American set designer Bri Emery, American actors Marcus Johns, Cody Johns and Robby Ayala, French dancers Les Twins, Spanish stylist Sara Escudero, American hair stylist Kristin Ess, Japanese nail artist Mei Kawajiri, American dancer Chachi Gonzales, and Pomeranian Barkley the Pom. During the filming, a dancer from Houston recorded her choreography online, attaining suggestions from her fans, some of whom were later invited to star in the video. The script communicated the influencers' involvement. Andelman suggested showcasing behind-the-scenes of a music-video shoot—which ended up being the video's framework. Trainor's team asked 180LA to evolve the look of the "All About That Bass" music video without straying too far from it. Epic president Sylvia Rhone spoke of the clip in an interview, mentioning:

"I think we will top . We have a much deeper reach into the social media platforms this time around, and with the influencers behind us, it shows that the video is not something that's just 'company-driven.' The reach goes much further, and comes from very authentic and respected voices."

Synopsis

Five people dance. Surrounded by a huge pair of lips.
The music video for "Lips Are Movin" featured many social media influencers. The pair of lips in the backdrop received comparisons to some visuals for The Rocky Horror Show.

The music video follows a simple premise: Trainor is found singing into a lip-themed microphone afront a pastel blue wall, sometimes flanked by some backup dancers, lip-featured television screens. Pairs of lips serve as prominent features throughout the video, of which include closeups of Trainor's mouth and a drawing of a large pair as a backdrop against a wall, which was compared to that of the musical The Rocky Horror Show, by Yahoo! writer Lyndsey Parker. Trainor is also seen reclining on a couch in the shape of lips, which Parker compared to the sofas used for reality show So You Think You Can Dance. The singer also sports lip-shaped earrings and sunglasses for some of her outfits. The clip durates on a quickly changing set, with props being lifted on and off screen by workers throughout the entire clip. The workers, however, are the video's featured social media stars who Trainor interacts with.

Reception

The music video drew in over 2,500,000 YouTube views in less than two days. Billboard writer Andrew Hampp wrote that its production was a "historic milestone in the realm of YouTube creators." The visuals are the first music video ever to be created entirely by social influencers. According to Andrew Hampp of Billboard, its release resulted in an 11% increase in Trainor's Twitter followers, 15.8% growth in Facebook fans, 41.3% increase in Instagram followers and an estimated doubling of her Vine followers. James Cowan of Canadian Business opined, "Cynics will view this as a decidedly stodgy brand trying to make itself hip by hanging out with cool kids," adding, "But a less-jaded eye might call it something else—arts patronage for the 21st century." Writing for music website Idolator, Bradley Stern called it as "squeaky-clean visual," and praised its bright and colorful imagery. Daily Express writer Stefan Kyriazis deemed the music video "red hot", while MTV UK wrote that the clip continued the bubbly, bright themes of Trainor's "All About That Bass" video, and noted that the singer's sequinned kitty top resembled the one American singer Katy Perry wore for the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards. Yahoo! writer Lyndsey Parker acclaimed Trainor's fashion in the clip and quipped that the video "seems to be an unofficial campaign to land her own M.A.C. Viva Glam endorsement deal". Fuse's Hilary Hughes felt that the visual was a bold and sassy sentiment, and stated that its style shift from the "All About That Bass" clip "definitely made a statement". Hughes went on to describe the video's dance routine as "fierce" and commented, "'Lips Are Movin' is a super-meta technicolor dance party, complete with confetti, pop art and the endearing self-awareness Meghan brings to each track". Mashable's Brian Anthony Hernandez opined, "The visuals are what you would expect from a bouncy pop song: young dancers, colorful backgrounds, quirky outfits and exaggerated expressions." AXS's Scott Shelter wrote that the visual was "every bit as playful, bright and fun" as the one for "All About That Bass".
