- Population data from 2022 unless otherwise stated.
- Most of the civilian areas on the Israeli side of the Gaza border had lightly armed volunteer security teams.
- Includes on duty police, military, and other professional armed security forces. Off duty IDF reservists were counted as civilians, so some available lists of names include more people with military ranks than the official number of military deaths.
- The 7 October attacks were planned by Hamas and led by their military wing the Al-Qassam Brigades, but at least 3 other groups also took part on the day, The other 3 factions were a second Islamist group Palestinian Islamic Jihad's Saraya Al-Quds , and two much smaller Marxists / Nationalist factions the PFLP and DFLP. One third of the hostages were subsequently held by Islamic Jihad. A small number of hostages, including the youngest, were only ever publicly described as being held by "another group", this could have been the PFLP of DFLP.
- Attendance at the festival was reported to be 3,500 but figures vary. After the attack, relatives searching for missing loved ones said more than one thousand were at the event at the time of the attack. Some festival attendees estimated 3,000–4,000 people. An emergency medic who responded to the massacre at the festival placed attendance at 3,000.
- There were at least two additional soldiers on duty that day who survived.
- Including Samer Fouad Al-Talalka who was later shot by IDF ground forces, along with two hostages taken at Kibbutzim.
- 22 hospitals were ordered to evacuate but many patients could not be safely relocated. No suitable alternative hospital facilities were provided. Most evacuation orders were refused, until the hospitals were occupied by Israeli ground forces.
- later returned and reburied
- he
- At least 5 premature infants were left in the hospital when staff were forced to evacuate.
- Witnesses said a number of people including women, children and babies were killed execution-style by Israeli forces while sheltering inside the school.

Video and images obtained by Al Jazeera on 13 Dec 2023 showed bodies piled up inside the Shadia Abu Ghazala School in the al-Faluja area, west of the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip. Witnesses said a number of people including women, children and babies were killed execution-style by Israeli forces while sheltering inside the school. The woman said there were newborn children among them. “The Israeli soldiers executed those innocent families at point blank,” she added.
