Muhammad Sadiq Malkani, also known as M. Sadiq Malkani, is a Pakistani paleontologist, geologist and former director of the Geological Survey of Pakistan who has recently been criticised for publishing many invalid fossil taxa in predatory journals.
Career
Beginning in 2001, Malkani excavated fossils that he would later study from the Vitakri Formation of Pakistan, and he began his career publishing legitimate species names including Pabwehshi pakistanensis in 2001, Brohisaurus kirthari in 2003, and Induszalim bala in 2006.
Sometime in 2006, Malkani published several papers informally naming multiple theropod and sauropod species from Pakistan which would begin his career of naming invalid species. In this paper, he names Pakisauridae and Balochisauridae in a 2006 paper, and prioritized them over Titanosauridae and Saltasauridae, which were both named earlier.
During the time that he was director of the GSP, he published papers directly through the Geological Survey of Pakistan and also ResearchGate before he began to publish his papers in the predatory journal Open Journal of Geology, where the quality of his papers has diminished greatly; for example, one paper from 2019 saw him name and describe nineteen invalid species without being sufficiently described.
He has since named many informal and invalid species on Open Journal of Geology.
Controversy
He has become controversial because when he names a new species, the remains are often of a low quality and are undiagnostic, with any diagnoses given being crude and rudimentary, suggesting the information he provides is often misleading. The images provided are also of a low quality, suggesting the images are not reviewed by editors meaning the journals he publishes in are predatory journals.
