Operation Cast Lead is a Israeli air strike operation launched on December 27, 2008, in order to destroy Hamas military capacities.

The airstrikes killed more than 205 Palestinians and injured 270 others . According to Hamas spokesman, at least 140 of them were Hamas militants.

The air offensive followed weeks of intense Palestinian rocket and mortar fire on southern Israel. See: List of Qassam rocket attacks, 2008

Israeli military officials said more than 100 tons of bombs were dropped on Gaza
