They added that 18 of the victims were members of the Athamna family and that those killed were civilians. Some of the shells diverted 1 km off its course and hit a house in the outskirts of Beit Hanoun. The IDF ordered an investigation into the incident to be led by Major General Meir Kalifi. The investigation found that the shells diverted from their course due to a radar malfunction, which led to wrong aiming. IDF and PM Olmert expressed sorrow over the deaths of the civilians but stressed that the responsibility lies on the terrorists which used those civilians as a human shield.
