This is an alphabetical list of the sovereign states of the world, including both de jure and de facto independent states.

Criteria for inclusion

This list derives its definition of a sovereign state from Article 1 of the Montevideo Convention of 1933. According to the Convention, a sovereign state should possess the following qualifications: (a) a permanent population, (b) a defined territory, (c) government, and (d) capacity to enter into relations with the other states. The list includes all states that satisfy these criteria and claim independence.

The notes include information on:

• The reason a non-de jure state is listed (also listed at the de jure state)
• The overseas dependencies
• The federal structures if applicable
• The autonomous areas inside the territory of the sovereign state

The names are given in English and in the official language(s) of the state.

• The names in English are the short official names (e.g. Afghanistan) followed by the (long) official name (e.g. The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan).
• The names in the native languages are the short and official names in the official language(s). If needed, they have been transliterated into Romanized characters, but original scripts (such as Cyrillic or Chinese characters) are included. When possible, the romanization preferred by the country has been used.

The listing of any name in this article is not meant to imply an official position in any naming dispute. Entities considered to be micronations that are not internationally recognized are not included.

There are 201 entities on this list. The breakdown into categories is as follows:

• 192 United Nations member states
• One state with general international recognition but not UN membership governed by the Holy See within Rome (a UN permanent observer): the Vatican City.
• One state, not a UN member since late 1971, recognized by 24 UN members as well as the Holy See, and currently with de facto international relations with most states, the Republic of China, popularly referred to as Taiwan and in some cases referred to as Chinese Taipei.

• One state, member of the African Union, recognized by 47 UN members though never itself a UN member, with more than half of its claimed territory under military occupation, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in Western Sahara.
• One state, not a UN member, recognised only by Turkey, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
• Five states, neither UN members nor recognised by any states that are sovereign according to some interpretations of article 1 of the Montevideo Convention, Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Somaliland, South Ossetia and Transnistria. De jure status of these entities is also included.

Unlisted are the following states that fail to reach the criteria but which customary international law nonetheless might define as states under the Montevideo Convention:

• Two states, in free association with New Zealand and represented in most matters by that country: Niue and the Cook Islands.
• One state, a UN observer member, recognized by 96 other states, but with extraterritorial areas within Rome is the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
• One state, member of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, recognized by Arab states and some other UN members though never itself a UN member, with no sovereignty over its claimed territories, the State of Palestine in the Palestinian territories.
• One state, never a UN member, only ever briefly recognised by the Republic of Georgia, with all of its claimed territory under military occupation, the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.

Also not listed below are various disputed territories which cannot be justifiably assigned to the latter category, including Jubaland and Puntland (Somalia), Cabinda (Angola), Kosovo (Serbia), Kurdistan (Iraq), Kurdistan (Turkey) and numerous others.
