9M729 Oreshnik (Russian: Орешник, lit.'Hazel'), according to Russian president Vladimir Putin, is a Russian hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM); Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary, described the Oreshnik as a variant of Russia’s RS-26 ballistic missile. First announced by Putin during a speech on 21 November 2024. The missile is claimed to have a speed of Mach 10 (12,300 km/h; 7,610 mph; 3.40 km/s), while it is very difficult to intercept.

Operational use

On 21 November 2024, during the Russo-Ukrainian War, the Oreshnik was first used in combat in an attack which Russia said targeted the PA Pivdenmash facility in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. Prior to confirmation of the Oreshnik's use, the strike was originally claimed by Ukraine to have been conducted using an intercontinental ballistic missile. The Oreshnik reportedly uses an MIRV payload, which was shown in unverified footage of the attack. The missile was launched from the Astrakhan Oblast, likely from the Kapustin Yar training ground.

US officials note that the missile is still experimental and Russia only has a few in its possession, and that it is unlikely to be regularly deployed against Ukraine.
