"Hopp! Hopp! Hopp! My sweet little horsey!
Hopp! Hopp! Hopp! Where do you want to go?
Over that high wall?
Well really I don't know!
Hopp! Hopp! Hopp! My sweet little horsey!
Hopp! Hopp! Hopp! Where - do - you - want - to go?"
Paul Scheerbart, Katerposie

Away with the sourpusses, the wailing Willies, the sobersides, the brow furrowers, the eternally serious, the sweet-sour ones, the forever important!
Important! Important! This damned habit of acting important! Tombstone and cemetry facades in front of junk shops and old clothes stores! Smash the shell-lime Doric, Ionic, Corinthian columns, demolish the pinheads! Down with the 'respectibility' of sandstone and plate-glass, in fragments with the rubbish of marble and precious wood, to the garbage heap with all that junk!
'Oh, our concepts: space, home, style!' Ugh, how these concepts stink! Destroy them, put an end to them! Let nothing remain! Chase away their schools, let the professiorial wigs fly, we'll play catch with them. Blast! blast! Let the dusty, matted, gummed up world of concepts, ideologies and systems feel our cold north wind! Death to the concept-lice! Death to everything stuffy! Death to everything called title, dignity, authority! Down with everything serious!
Down with all camels that won't go through the eye of the needle, with all worshippers of Mammon and Moloch! 'The worhshippers of force must knuckle under to the force!' We are sick of the bloodsucking - caterwauling in the early light. In the distance shines our tomorrow. Hurray, three times hurray for our kingdom without forces! Hurray for transparent, the clear! Hurray for purity! Hurray for crystal! Hurray and hurray for the fluid, the graceful, the angular, the sparkling, the flashing, the light - hurray for everlasting architecture!

Summertime

Hey McG, have a great summer and say hello to your friendly Spitfire from us both here. Thanks for sticking up for me at NRHP, man. Good friend to have in a barroom brawl. Her family came over from overseas to visit us, and there's a frosty mug of beer here awaiting your visit anytime. Surf's up —Dogears (talk · contribs) 01:40, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Delisted GA

I would have appreciated it if you had given me some time to discuss this with you, before delisting this article that I worked hard on as a GA. Please note that two other editors, the GA reviewer, User:Trishm, and the first Peer Review commentator, User:Anonymous_Dissident, both commented quite positively on the quality of the article. Please reconsider the GA listing. Thank you for your time. Yours, Smee 19:47, 22 June 2007 (UTC).

Ditto on the speed of delisting. I have read your comments, and once again reread the criterion, and while there is no doubt that the article could be improved by including more architectural information, I still do not consider that the article merited immediate delisting, as it does not obviously violate the criteria for GA status. I'm sure you didn't intend to be highhanded, but I would rather be considered to be part of a team to improve wikipedia, and I found your approach demoralizing rather than helpful. Be that as it may, the suggested improvements are good ones. Trishm 13:39, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Welcome back!

Nice to see you in the project again. --Ghirla 17:42, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Notability

Thanks for the welcome to the project.

I've made my own attempt at notability criteria, realizing that:

  • It's almost impossible, and
  • It will need to be extensively revised, internationalized and combined with the work you've done.

I was motivated by an AfD debate in which a school in Colorado claimed notability for green technology, yet did not possess any independent green certifications or credentials. Maybe we can make another try at getting this to work.

Let me know what you think, if you find yourself stranded indoors in front of a computer. Acroterion (talk) 15:42, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback. I've added a little about "listing", although I'm not familiar enough with British practice, not to mention all the Parks and Gardens and Ancient Monuments, to have much credibility in writing about the UK. It gets worse for France (160,000 listed monuments historiques!) and Italy, I'm afraid. I believe we'd have to just lean on similar concepts for other nations, or hope for contributions from those who know. Acroterion (talk) 21:40, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Dear Mcginnly

After reviewing Google's terms, and considering you're working on a free version of the same image (thanks for your message at my talk page, btw! :), I've deleted it as a replaceable, improperly tagged copvio. I tried to help with the rationale, but as you point out, it's better to eliminate this problem altogether and to aim at the solution you propose. Have a nice day! :) Phaedriel - 15:48, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Aquatics_Centre_Games-time4-EDIT.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Aquatics_Centre_Games-time4-EDIT.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Misplaced Pages articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Misplaced Pages:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Misplaced Pages policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MER-C 09:55, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Redirect of Ustad Ahmad Lahori

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Ustad Ahmad Lahori, by SXT40 (talk · contribs), another Misplaced Pages user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Ustad Ahmad Lahori is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Ustad Ahmad Lahori, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 06:09, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Mcginnly!

Just go back to Quilian's talk page, if you want to be entertained.....--Amandajm 11:28, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Oh, you are very cheering!
Fortunately, I don't want to write about current stuff, and when someone like Brosi comes along and says "We needs some Historiography, I've got access to a university library" then I'm delighted.
I've got this sort of feeling that in order to really write about a building you need to have located the mains switch, investigated the plumbing, stuck your head into the cleaners cupboard under the stairs and eaten a sandwich on the roof. But I'm getting a bit too old and fat to do ladders and manholes.
As for old Sir Bannister's fat book, the 3,000 illustrations are an absolute boon. It also provides concise descriptions of a huge number of buildings in a very systematic manner. I'm fairly well aware of the shortcomings. My current edition is fairly recent, but the one I used back in my high school years didn't do Baroque at all!
The part that Banister Fletcher did best was Medieval. While the other sections have greatly expanded, those parts of the book haven't changed much over the years. Unfortunately, its restricted to Western Europe, as is the rest of my library. I wish their was more info in English about architecture in Eastern Europe. I suppose it will happen because there is an increasing interest in touring those areas.
On the other matter, I hope Quilian finds it's funny. I could have deleted it, but I thought it was too good. --Amandajm 15:59, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

The Cathedrals of England

I can hardly believe what I am reading. I mean, I can hardly believe that anyone would think it appropriate to write it into a wiki article, particularly with allegations of witchcraft. It doesn't take witchcraft to get everyone to go away; knowing how to play perfectly respectable power games is quite sufficient!

The whole manner in which the page is written is not really wiki style. All the appropriate info about the bells could be wikified. I've got this little plan that I'll check out all the ancient Cathedrals of England and do a little rewrite. I've visited quite a large number of them including Chester. If I start rewriting the architecture, people who know things will get enthusiastic and add their two ha'pence or make corrections. (I made some silly mistake with the height width ratio of Cologne and someone picked it up really quickly.)

I'll do a few others before I do Chester, starting with Canterbury where I go whenever I'm in the UK, and Lincoln where I've been recently and took a lot of photos. Gotta get back to Romanesque architecture. --Amandajm 02:30, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Malcolm Boyle

He's a composer, but I've realized that wasn't made clear in the article. I have a CD with one of his anthems on it, and I think many choristers and organists in the Church of England have heard of him. I've changed the article slightly. DTOx 02:56, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Diagrams and file formats

Hi, and first of all thanks for contributing the excellent plans for the Scottish Parliament building and the Prince's Palace of Monaco. However, I note that you've uploaded both of those files in JPEG format, which is lossy and also tends to be inefficient at compressing line art. As described in more detail at Misplaced Pages:Preparing images for upload, such images should preferably be uploaded in PNG, or, better yet, in SVG format. Since you presumably have the vector originals for those plans, would it be possible for you to reupload those images in a more suitable format?

Thanks in advance! —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 18:33, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Ah, sorry, I see you're already aware of the issue. If you originally drew these in Photoshop, I'd suggest just exporting as PNG and uploading that. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 18:41, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Energy portal review

Hi Mcginnly. Knowing that you have an interest in an unconnected portal, I wondered if you might like to comment on the one I've been working on - energy portal - which is now under consideration as a featured portal. Compared to other candidates it has had relatively few people contributing to the debate, despite being up for discussion for 2 months. If you have time perhaps you would like to take a look? The candidate page can be found here. Gralo 18:20, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Graphics Lab

Hi there, you made a request a while back at the Graphics Lab about Image:Royal Palace Monaco plan2.jpg and converting it to SVG. I've started making an SVG, but the request was a while back, so I thought I should notify you. Please see the Images to Improve page..

And yes, unfortunately the summer is bloody non-existant, which is a terrible shame. --Dave the Rave (DTR)talk 23:15, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

I was going to finish off the SVG, there's lots of little lines that need adding (I think they're railings) but I never got round to it. I'll do this eventually, unless you say otherwise. I use Inkscape - it's free, actively developed, and does the job more than adequately (and, in my opinion, better than some commercial software).
If there's anything else than needs SVG-ification, I'd be more than happy to help. --Dave the Rave (DTR)talk 15:53, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
Oh, yeah, I'd forgotten about that. No, no one took a look at Image:Scottish_Parliament_site_plan.jpg, but I'll have a go. --Dave the Rave (DTR)talk 15:56, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
I've uploaded what I've got so far to Image:Scottish Parliament site plan.svg. --Dave the Rave (DTR)talk 19:21, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Welcome back! I hope you're back here because you like this place, and not because you dislike the other place. St Kilda and Miralles

I have had a brief interchange with our mutual friend Globaltraveller in which I asked him:

I recently received an email quoting a Nature article: "The architect Enric Miralles design for the new Scottish parliament drew inspiration from the St Kildan parliament, incorporating the forms of upturned keels of boats as a representation of the island's life." Nature; 4/21/2005, Vol. 434 Issue 7036, p959 - Do you have any independent corroboration of this idea?"

He apparently does not not, but kindly suggested you might be able to help. St Kilda just made FA and it would be nice to make the link before it hits the main page. Ben MacDui/Walk 15:31, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

St Nicolas Cathedral

Hi i think we made a mistake when we renamed the cathedral name and it seems that we have to correct because this is a hashing for the history of this church and hiding facts , the cathedral was a cathedral and then renamed mean originally as per the history . so the cathedral is the name of the page and renamed after and this is better for many reasons per example

http://en.wikipedia.org/Pammakaristos_Church

still the same naming but it is written that later it became a mosque .

i wish that we can correct it that .

Non-free rationale for File:Vordemberge No 15.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Vordemberge No 15.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Misplaced Pages is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 23:08, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Pombaline. Just 6 yers to late.

Hello Mcginnly

Sorry to be only 6 years late in the answer, but I do not come to often see wikipedia in English, and, because de fact that the international history of art ignore completely Portugal,I did not think there were questions.

Unfortunately I can not answer this question. In any of the books I consulted found clear references on this subject. Everyone says pombalino spread in Portugal, which is true, and little else. There may be something in Brazil. However we should not forget that this style was developed following a major earthquake and the need to rebuild the city quickly. Because of the distance relative to Europe, Brazil was still strong Baroque influences, so it is not possible to have given great attention to Pombaline. When the Portuguese court moved to Rio de Janeiro, due to the franch invasions the Ponbaline had more than 50 years and what developed was Neoclassicism. In other African countries I am sure that does not exist because the architecture of the eighteenth century is essentially military. It is possible to have some things, very isolated exemples, and without much expression, taken by settlers. It is important to realize that all this is conjecture because actually I do not have clear answers.Azoiensis (talk) 10:09, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. File copyright problem with File:Friedrichstrasse Mies.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Friedrichstrasse Mies.jpg. However, it is currently missing information on its copyright and licensing status. Misplaced Pages takes copyright very seriously. You may refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Misplaced Pages. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation.
